Title: census occupations
Post by: ghallen on Sunday 15 January 23 16:15 GMT (UK)
I am really sorry to keep asking for handwriting translations.

This one is the 1850 census; https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/1190924?mark=67c3abc9d0a90def363769675603fc53607340b6e217e643366fec599547a4db (https://www.ancestry.co.uk/sharing/1190924?mark=67c3abc9d0a90def363769675603fc53607340b6e217e643366fec599547a4db)
Looking at the occupation field for occupants of the Steam Packet Hotel.

So far I've managed to figure a few out:
- Licensed Victualler - pub
- ?
- Barmaid
- Cook / ?
- ?
- Barmaid

FindMyPast have them transcribed as:

Barman and cellarman
Cook domestic
Oil and colorman ??

I need to get back on findmypast! Ancestry don't do transcriptions for occupations (or I haven't figured out how to view them yet).

Many thanks :D

I did a quick google, apparently oil and colourmen sold paints, varnishes and the like.

The lines 3 & 6 look like Barmaid. The small written to the right,  is the same on both

I'll give it a go:
2- Arthur son aged 30 Barman, Cellar man
3 - Emma daur aged 31 Housemaid (Inn)
4 - Kate daur aged 21 Cook (Domestic?)
5 - James son aged 19 (not sure but looks very similar to brother Arthur, so some sort of Cellar man?)
6 - Lizzie daur Housemaid (Inn)

However, could easily be wrong.

Don't feel guilty!
People enjoy trying to decipher unreadable script.
That's what this board is here for!  :)
