Hi,
my G/G Grandfather John King was married in Glasgow in 1860 aged 20, on his marriage cert his father is listed as Felix King, labourer, his mother is listed as Anne King M.S. Mckay.
John applied for poor relief in 1879 giving his birthplace as Omagh Co Tyrone, but that's as much as i can find for his place of birth, i searched for his father on Griffiths, there are three Felix Kings listed but all three are in Cavan, one in Killishandra and two in Belturbert, there isn't a huge distance between Omagh and Belturbert as the crow flies, i'm just wondering if there's a link? or am i clutching at straws.

Do you have a copy of the marriage record? FamilySearch indicates the marriage took place in 1857, not 1860 and that John was likely older than 20. It may have said he was "of age" which means anything over 21. Felix may have already been deceased by the time of the marriage -- not always noted as deceased on the marriage record.

This is a transcription from a family tree, they have not uploaded the cert so I can't vouch for the accuracy.

Get the original from ScotlandsPeople for a reasonable amount of money so you know for sure. From FamilySearch:

This marriage date does not appear on ScotlandsPeople.

I know. I looked. It may be a church record. You'd have to look at the original microfilm. I'd still get the civil record from ScotlandsPeople.

Thanks Eileen and Debra, i have a copy of the marriage cert from S.P., it states the marriage took place in 1857, at the bottom of the cert it states the marriage was registered in 1860,(why would it take so long to register?) it also states they were married in St Marys not St Mungos. it also gives Johns age as 20 not "of age".
John.

I believe he may have lied about his age -- given the ages listed on the various census records. This doesn't help you find Felix but provides a more accurate year of birth.
-
His age is all over the place on different certs,
Marriage 1857 age 20
1861 Census age 30
1871 census age 41
1881 census age 40
Death cert 1897 age 57.

The late registration was probably just a case of information not given to the registrar by the church.
FamilySearch have within the same film number - NEGLECTED ENTRIES Births, marriages and deaths (abt 1820-1860) registered 1860-1868).

Debra, re the info on the family tree, does this mean someone else is researching John King?
is the tree on Ancestry? or find my past?
Thanks.
