To everyone, Happy New Year!!
I have a problem with the McNicol family, not related, who have somehow become intermingled with my Nicol ancestors in the Blueskin [now Waitati] cemetery. The Dunedin cemeteries office is not able to provide any information.
Surname McNICOL
Forename ELIZABETH
Age 79 Years
Gender Female
Date of Death 24 Jun 1899
Last Address WAITATI, DUNEDIN
Cemetery WAITATI CEMETERY
Location Block 8. Plot 25
Date of Burial 28 Jun 1899
Type Burial
Occupation WIDOW
"The following burials are also in this Plot"
DAVIS MARY** 28 Years, Burial, Died 4 Jun 1877
**Mary nee NICOL was my ancestor. Also buried in this cemetery is her baby daughter, Catherine Davis who died on 4.6.1877.
[There is a photograph of the headstone for Mary Davis and daughter Catherine.]
Then we have:
Surname MCNICOL
Forename MALCOLM
Age 50 Years
Gender Male
Date of Death 20 Jun 1877
Last Address BLUESKIN, DUNEDIN
Cemetery WAITATI CEMETERY
Location Block 8. Plot 31
Date of Burial 23 Jun 1877
Type Burial
Occupation FARMER
"The following burials are also in this Plot
There were none found"
James Nicol and his wife Euphemia are buried in this cemetery. [Parents of Mary Davis].
Can anyone tell me anything about the two McNicol's mentioned above please?
Minniehaha.

All I can see so far is

You have been very busy Signal, thank you!!
As so much time has now passed, we probably cannot determine why the McNicols and Nicols were confused in the cemetery records.
Kind regards,
Minniehaha.
-
Not the first case of confusing sons- M'Nicol with fathers- Nicol. O course Scots also liked to use the same given names for sons. I'm sure it is not just my Scots who used eldest son always Robert second son William - - - the cousins get very confusing and confused I have to add year and place of birth and that is not always enough.

In this case, the McNicol & Nicol families were not in any way related, making the burial situation confusing.

Maybe the NICOLs were the outliers and lumped in with the McNICOLs in the mind of the local sexton

Hi Signal,
"Maybe the NICOLs were the outliers and lumped in with the McNICOLs in the mind of the local sexton"
Who knows? It is another instance of something known to be incorrect but not able to be rectified. :(
Minniehaha.

Try looking at the spelling of Wetherston Weatherstone with and without an extra s.
One of my ancestors arrived at that locality from Bendigo (and where did that name come from ?)
Then there is the related name Wedderburn/Wetherburn
