I have a bit of a problem to do with my grandmother. Born 28th March 1910, named Emma Muriel Poland (changed to Polland during WW1 to sound less Germanic). Parents were John Poland 1871 and Emily Hitchens 1875. Resident and born in Liverpool yet 1911 census states Emma was born in Liscard, Cheshire even though they were living in Liverpool and had no family in Liscard or the Wirral at all.
I have an Ancestry subscription but any search I do will not come up with a birth certificate for her. Known by her middle name Muriel all her life, I just cannot pin down her birth. Could it be an adoption?
I'm not sure where to go next with this. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
With thanks
Ken

I suspect she wasn't their biological daughter. 1911 shows they had been married 13yrs & she is their only child

How far away is chorley from where her place of birth is supposed to be?
This might be completely wrong but but searching with the mother's maiden name i found the following
Hilda Platt
June qtr 1910
Maiden name Hitchens
Chorley
Ref 8e 440
Have you gone forward to the 1921 census
I ha e not checked this birth on 1911 yet
LM
On second thoughts I might be wrong but will leave it in LM

" Born 28th March 1910, named Emma Muriel Poland...........Resident and born in Liverpool"
If you are wanting to locate her birth record, where have you found this information about her birth date and place?

Chorley to Wirral is a long way and different counties. I looked at all births for a Muriel in the June qtr 1910 with a Birkenhead or Wallasey RD but all had a mmn - none showed an illegitimate birth
Of course her birth may have been registered with a different christian name and changed by the Poland's

Suspect birthdate will be either from 1939 register or death reg
Marriage reg 1897 for John Poland shows Emily as Emily Johanna Hitchins - not Hitchens

June qtr 1910
Emma Prince Myers Birkenhead 8A 476 - no mothers maiden name but died same quarter so not her
This is the only Emma or Muriel birth without a mmn - Liscard came under Birkenhead RD until 1912 then under Wallasey

1921 also shows Mary Elizabeth Polland b 1906, Liverpool.
The family are living in Wallasey at that time.
I can’t see relationships.

Thank you all for your time and help. I'm definitely leaning towards an adoption of some sort myself.
Carole W, the 13 years is a bit of a giveaway that there may have been problems conceiving.
LM, The Chorley connection may be too far but not implausible. Although Emily's father was from Bristol and other Hitchins being this far north may rule it out.
Wivenhoe, All the info has come from my dad, Emma's son who has a very good knowledge of family information. plus all the Census records prove correct (as correct as 10 yearly records can be)
Carole W, the different name at birth is most likely. It happened a lot especially if the adoption was a young baby I suppose.
Garden Genie, Thanks for the 1921 Census info. I know they moved over to Wallasey and had the Fish and chip shop there. Mary Elizabeth might be a line to look at, thanks.
You have all been very helpful. My dad has tried many years ago to find her birth cert to no avail. There are so many more avenues to go down and use now that I'm still hopeful I'll solve this for him. When Emma married my grandfather she brought him to live in Wallasey, all his relatives lived in Liverpool. Her reason? She was quoted as saying "she always felt an affinity to Liscard"
Anyway, thanks again.
Ken.
