Morning Folks
Hope everyone has recovered from the weekend, I didn't over eat but of course I don't really have such large meals with all the trimmings so I suppose I have over eaten just slightly, didn't drink either due to recent medication but I don't need drink to enjoy myself, can get intoxicated by the atmosphere
Have been to the nearest coast this morning , really a beautiful day, sun out and blue clear sky, watched those who chose dipping into the sea with the life boats hovering, didn't see anyone swimming but there must have been hundreds dipping , not for me
It hasn't seemed like Christmas this year, didn't get father Christmas driving round with his Rotary supporters , it is always nice to see the children with father Christmas but of course they are also collecting for charity.
I didn't get to midnight service this year, I decided I didn't want to be out in the car on my own after midnight, think that was sensible
Enjoy whatever time you are not working this week and we'll done to those who worked for essential services over Christmas and thank you, my friend spent 5 hours in hospital yesterday after collapsing , got an appt for tomorrow as a follow up, my friend said it was fist class and she couldn't have got better treatment if it was private
Take care everyone specially those who are snowed on

Oh crumbs LM I think you’re the only one who’s remembered today is a Monday and therefore time for a new thread. We’ve been having a discussion about which day is actually bin day just like that advert on the tv.
We went to a midnight service …. at 4pm. The first year they’ve tried it instead of midnight. Apparently they got about the same number as they usually get attending.

I missed out on carol singing
But have a brilliant idea .
On Thurs eve I will do signlanguage carol at open mic
Not a problem I don't yet know all my numbers in Makaton
+I certainly don't know different birds
So I will just sign " bird ' for partridge .dove
hen .calling bird
Id like to go up to 7 because I have a wonderful memory of my aunt Sylvia who lisped singing " theven thwans.a thwimming "
Meanwhile I can sing carol's to myself but have a sore throat
I had a CD of a church service with carols but think I may have given it away .
If I manage to overcome technophobia may be able to get BBC radio leicester singalong on play back

Oh crumbs LM I think you’re the only one who’s remembered today is a Monday and therefore time for a new thread.
I've just realised this morning when I spotted the thread!
Boxing Day dips took place here too, three within three miles along our bit of the coast. I didn't go but saw the photos of a lot of hardy souls going into the sea, it was a lovely sunny day for it and low tide, lots of money raised for charity.
Brigid, your sign language carols sounds great, hope your throat is soon better.
Hope your friend is soon better LM.

Thank you Roobarb , my friend has an appt today for further tests today, it happened a another friend several times, I must contact him to find out his results and what medication he was on, I do wonder if it is a blood flow problem but I am not a Dr so can't guess or suggest
I have made an effort to make sure I know what date it us and what day for this week, we aren't doing our usual things and I think if would be easy to forget, not that I am worried really, I think I am all there as they say
Really nice weather for the time of the year, we can get out and about, must admit I really do not like the week after Christmas, can't help feeling a bit sorry for thise who are stuck in due to snow but in places like Canada I understand the roads are cleared very quickly, not like here where the sidecroads are so treacherous.
I tried something completely different last night, I had been given a huge slice of Christmas cake, it was so rich that I decided to put creme fraiche on it and it was really delicious, tasted more like Christmas pudding to be honest
Enjoy your day

Catching up on the washing today and a bit of tv that we missed. Going to watch the Doc Martin Christmas special next.
-
Sorry Doc Martin has finished now, he never ceased to make me laugh, did a bit of catching up ourselves yesterday
LM
-
I love Doc Martin, I've watched all of the old series more than once. I recorded the Christmas special on my hard drive DVD recorder to watch another day. Yesterday, said recorder decided to give up. :( I tried everything to resurrect it but looks like it has gone to techno heaven so I then ordered a new one, due to arrive tomorrow. I can watch DM and other stuff on the streaming device but unfortunately that means I can't fast forward through the adverts. Ah well, there are sadly many much worse problems in the world.
I hope Diana is okay over in Canada, have been reading about the dreadful storms that hit the US, some people stranded in their cars for two days, it's unimaginable.
-
I didn’t get very far with Doc Martin as the itv catch up service threw a hissy fit in the middle and wouldn’t work. It’s just been upgraded and supposed to be shiny and new…….. same issues as before from my perspective.
Have been enjoying Richard Osman’s Festive House of Games series .
-
We can't do any catch ups on itv3, I we can't watch or tape it we lose it, frustrating
LM
-
Have you got access to the new ITV X streaming service LM? It's supposed to include all ITV channels.
Candleflame, I hope you get to see the rest of the programme, it was very touching. :)
-
We have a new season of Doc Martin, I think it is on Acorn.
The worst of this storm has moved east towards the Maritime provinces. We might get some snow tonight but not much and then a warm up so there will be a lot of melted snow!
Arrived at my daughter’s yesterday, trip was normal time, but I was going a bit slower, on the other hand not a lot of traffic on roads. Some messy spots, but I’ve been in worse.
So this morning we left for our AirBNB winter cabin/chalet/cottage. Had to go through Toronto, busy but not quite as busy as usual (apparently busiest highway in world, which I didn’t quite believe, but internet says it is, so it must be so!), then we got delayed an hour due to an accident ahead. Finally got to our cabin, worth the wait! Very big, can see the lake from the yard, lots of goodies awaiting us, and within an hour we had 11 deer in the back yard, along with a rabbit, lots of birds at feeders, and four flying geese but not Canada Geese, these were white.
And tomorrow my son and his partner and grandson arrive!
-
Good to hear you're safe and well Diana, your cabin sounds beautiful with all the wildlife. Have a wonderful time!
-
Diana , so pleased you got safely to the cabin and that the family will be able to join you. Have a wonderful time.
I have a ‘discussion’ topic for anyone who is interested. It came about from the conversation my husband and I had today along the lines of ‘ are you sure the bin doesn’t go out till tomorrow as two of our neighbours have already put theirs out! ‘ The discussion is about the mental capacity test that medics do and might they need to adapt it slightly in the future ,with apologies if they’ve changed the questions they ask, since I had to hear it when my dad was in his 90’s. ( this is uk so I don’t know what happens in other countries sorry).
So my memories are they ask what day it is, what date it is and what year it is. Well day of the week I might get right unless it’s between Christmas and New Year. What date is it - we’ll I can look on my phone, the Tv listing magazine or calendar but generally I don’t need to know the date. I’m younger than a few of you in here ( because you talk of being retired or having specially significant birthdays) but in my part time job I don’t need to know the date really. I do need to know if it’s a Monday Tuesday or Wednesday as we do child care those days and have to make sure they get to their after school activities with the right kit on the right day. Shift workers in some jobs don’t need to know the date , just what their target is of how many widgets they have to attach to their wodget before their shift ends. ( caring professions and admin will score highly on this as they do need to know the date every shift. )
The year …..well who lost track of the years with covid. 2020 was the worst year that everyone wants to forget, but 2021 wasn’t much better as assorted areas of the country got locked down at different times.I know this as I didn’t get to meet my new grandson for the first time as early as hoped as our area was in lockdown at different times to them. So if they ask in the future ‘ what year was covid’, they might get different answers.
They ask who is the prime minister. Without being political, a few months ago, everyone could have been confused as to who held that role. I have a family member in their 40’s who has no interest in the politicians and if they were asked that question, they’d say ‘ I haven’t a scoobie’. Might that question need changing?
They ask you to remember an address like 34 John Street then ask you a few minutes later what the address was. Is that the same as when you go up the stairs and think now what did I come upstairs for or where are my glasses, in which case many of us are ‘doomed’ from a very early age.
They ask you to count backwards from 100 in 7’s. I can’t do that, I have never been able to do that and unless I set myself a homework task of learning that by rote now, I will never manage that. I am just rubbish at numbers. ( my dad passed that bit with flying colours and a puzzled look as if to say that was easy as he worked with numbers all his life in his daily work). He didn’t manage the address test though.
So over to anyone who has a comment. What’s your thoughts?
-
Interesting question candle flame
Some questionaires have been re written
I think these questions were written by men so more focussed on numbers
I get blocked there too
I tested out questionnaire for emigrants and would NOT. Have been given British nationality based on my results
For dementia I'm sure I'd score high or low
If I was asked about dates to begin with
I have very little need of knowing what day of week it is except when im going to Fridays comedy workshop .
All other things i.ll get reminders for the day or hours before ." Are you coming berking today " "will you get here before 2pm ?" Do you need a lift ? "
I feel like my memory is getting really bad
Don't ask me what I ate yesterday or where I went
Maybe brain is just too full of ancestors ;+
Their facts
Brain games like crosswords + Sudoko are supposed to be good
-
Sounds marvellous Diana. Have a wonderful time.
Candleflame: I had to do most of that 2 days after the stroke. Also some tests for eyesight/double vision etc. Plus various balance tests. And make a hot drink, planning the entire procedure along a lengthy, narrow kitchen unit, when mobility was very poor.
The point being, (in this instance,) they were looking at my mental capacity, not just my memory, and I had the impression the way my answers were formed held as much importance as the actual answer I gave.
I can imagine that saying "I have always been rubbish at figures", and having a go, shows more cognition, than blankly counting forward from 1.
But hopefully someone who has been trained in this line will pop in and clarify.

Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas.
I am just up, i realise that is lazy but I am so tired. Went in half an hour early on Christmas morning so that night shift could get home early to see their kids open their presents. The agreement was they'd come in half an hour early at night so that we could see our kids before they went to bed. They messaged to say they didn't see why they should have to come in early as it wasn't fair. So they came in late, all together looking smug. This meant I was half an hour late leaving, as in half an hour after my official shift finish time not after we had planned. My 12.5hr shift turned into a 13.5hr shift. Boxing day night shift called in sick so by the time we got someone we were again half an hour late getting away. Yesterday different people called in sick, we got cover, they then decided they were refusing to work with us and had a stand up argument in the corridor with the duty manager in the corridor. Result late out again.
My work shoes burst on boxing day and were digging into my heel. Started walking funny to try and save my foot as much as possible so now I have a sore calf on that side.
Got my younger daughter a lot of art stuff for her Christmas. Seems to have been a good choice she has been really prolific.
working again Friday so have 2 days to take the girls to spend their Christmas money and clean the house from top to bottom or will have a bad (worse 2023). So looks like 2023 will be worse, not great since been getting progressively worse for years and trial supposed to be next year and can't afford for that to go badly or it was all pointless. Problem is I have barely done any housework for 4 days (did Christmas dinner etc on Christmas Eve) so house is a complete disaster zone. Barely anywhere in the kitchen to sit anything down (older daughter been cooking when I was at work) and washing basket bursting at the seems and overflowing onto the floor. This will be the hardest to get done as my machine has quite long cycles and I don't have a lot of room to get it dry.
Have had some interesting answers to mini mental test questions. The week the Prime Minister changed and the Queen died was particularly tough because some had been in hospital for a while without access to the news.
-
PT
You have had a rough few days at work but enjoy your girls whilst you are off duty
Get your girls to help you tidy up, make it fun, this time of the year I aways feel as if my house looks as if a bomb has dropped, more so when i had visitors, so don't worry to much about being untidy, I wonder if whoever inspects you is tidy all the time, a teacher cousin of mine never ran a tidy house, it surprised me.
I had to laugh about the memory, today I went to the local hospital to book a blood test, the woman at the desk didn't know the date, I laughed and said I try to make sure I know the date just in case I get picked up by an ambulance and need to be aware, having heard sometime that ago about counting numbers if I can't sleep I practice counting backwards from 100 but never in 7's, we all go upstairs and forget what we have gone up for, so I have decided I won't worry about my memory as worry would make it worse although I must say I don't think I have much wrong with my mind at the moment.

Problem is, tidying up a bit is not enough. To stop 2023 being bad everything needs to be scrubbed and everything perfectly aligned. There is no chance I can do all that in one day. By everything I mean walls, all cupboards, skirting boards, I should have done a couple of hours each night the last few nights and not fallen asleep when I got back from Glasgow. My leg is still very sore.
-
I really cannot understand they whys and wherefores of the situation, if you rent and keep it tidy then I would assume you are doing it right, surely no one has to wash down walls , cupboards and skirting boards everytime you get a visit which seems to be quite frequent, I cannot understand Scottish law for single mothers, seems to be one sided in my opinion but then what do I know?
PT, you can only do your best .
LM
-
this time it is not for a visit. It is for the bells, New Year. If the house is not perfect you will have the worst luck possible for the whole of the next year, and I can't have things continuing to get worse.I can't spoil the trial, otherwise the girls will be in so much dangerous.
-
Oh, I understand now, for years I did the same Christmas eve and new year, by midnight house was ship shape, I was also clean, washed and sorted out my hair waiting for new year, but must confess I can't do as much now but I will do my best.
Good luck PT

I did the same thing and as the years passed and the family and work responsibility got greater I was always ill on Christmas Day.

I'm so glad I didn't know about that cleanliness superstition
I've spread paperwork everywhere in living room/kitchen
The room is tiny ... landlady dropped in yesterday and I had to clear the chair and a sofa space
I only wash up once a day
& With my vertigo I can't do any bending scrubbing or hoovering
I might be inspired now to clear floor space and ask if a neighbour could hoover
2023 is holding out positive vibes for me .
I would hate that to be jinxed cos my flat isnt clean OR. Tidy
It was going to be a new years resolution
Don't think I can get a cleaner before new year
Pharma We can only do our best .
My Scots grandma had health problems too and Never followed THAT traditiON or even told us about us
-
I do think it is a Scottish tradition but over the years it might have been relaxed, sometimes it is followed down through families, as the years pass and we get older we can't do as much as we used to, we can only do our best and in my opinion if our best isn't good enough for some , tough, one family member won't have visitors because she is ashamed of her house, I always think if my kitchen and bathroom are clean then any visitors wouldn't mind a book or paper left out, I don't live in Buck House .
With those thoughts in mind I am off to weald the carpet cleaner
LM

Have made efforts earlier years to have all done for the old year and clear as possible for the new, though generally I just think of it as starting afresh with good intentions, whether previous ones were kept up or not ;-)
Lovely Christmas with extended family during the day on Sunday hosted by great nephew in his new home with he and his wife catering very generously. Unfortunately his maternal grandparents, my older sister and brother-in-law, were unable to attend as b-i-l tested positive Christmas Eve … my sister too by Wednesday. Both a bit unwell but coping OK, live in a retirement village in own apartment and some family not too far away for errands etc, sister especially disappointed not to catch up with their 3 children and the grandchildren and family over this past week.
We made arrangements with oldest niece and her family for another get-together at our younger daughter's home midweek, an opportunity while they were holidaying from another city and to share some of the food we didn't need on Christmas Day when we eventually got back to our daughter's place for the evening meal. Really don't need or feel like much food in hot weather, great nephew being a big tech fan had a snow machine set up but that was more visual effect than cooling in the heat of the day outside, though inside the house cool with the air conditioning and some shaded areas outdoors where the tables and chairs were, their new inground pool is heated but still refreshing for those who made the most of it.
Saw his mum, #2 niece and husband again midweek too at the get-together and my younger sister was able to join us that day with two of her granddaughters as well. It meant that my attendants at our wedding were all together and a rare chance for a group photo and in advance of our 50th anniversary a few weeks away and we're not planning a big 'do'. Younger sister was my bridesmaid and the 2 nieces were flowergirls, one of husband's brothers was best man and also living in another city meaning a bit of travel involved in getting all of us together at once.
Our older daughter up north we were staying with for a few days for an early Christmas with grandchildren last diary week, spent Christmas Eve to Tuesday with her husband's parents before they, nana and poppa, leave for extended holiday, then heard that husband's sister who had travelled up to be with family tested positive on Boxing day on returning home, so they're all on alert again. She has had covid previously and was quite sick earlier in the year, also the parents had it 6 months ago with heavy cold type symptoms but laid low with isolation.
Otherwise fairly regular week of activity and catching up with the diary for the week, like others this time of year working out what days are what in regard to refuse collections, what places are open or closed etc. … we have the Doc Martin Christmas special on mainstream free to air TV channel tonight, Friday, in NZ.
Lovely to read that Diana has what she wished for to get away to being with family and to meet up with wee new grandson, with that dreadful storm USA and Canada clearing enough eventually, seems Viktoria is also still soaking up some family time as well or getting over a memorable trip.
Time now for a Happy New Year and my good wishes added to all for 2023

I started tidying up my paperwork at 6 a.m. yesterday morning which involved lots of different piles. I found some treasures :eg: a lovely letter from my late mother-in-law I might send to her daughter (I'm separated from from the son) .
Had breakfast + a break because I tire so quickly talked to a neighbour who. was going to the shops to buy light bulbs. I asked to go with .Due to my vertigo I prefer not to walk alone anywhere . I decided to have brunch in cafe where I could practice Makaton song .
Neighbour left me there .
I'm so glad I left the tidying behind and went for brunch because I sat near someone from Norway who told me about a talk in January I'd like to attend .then a member of my bookcllub came in and had lunch at my table .then chatted to the person next to me : turned out we'd talked on the phone when I was investigating the murder mystery in my alleyway . As a criminologist and actor who lives in the house murder victim Nora lived in .+ Whose sibling is a walking encyclopaedia of local Leicester knowledge we had a lot to share . & The idea of a mini docu drama may become a reality + not a grandiose idea
.They both joined my Facebook page of history mysteries on the spot
2 friends picked me up from cafe and brought me to MESSY flat ,helped me change the sheets & lift heavy things .I cleared some of the piles of papers & bags. one bag was for them . altogether a much lovelier afternoon than if I'd finished tidying .
I think karma was truly on my side

Glad yesterday worked out so well for you Brigid, and sounds like Mare has had a lovely time too. :)
Regarding the old thoughts on The Bells, and what they bring for the year to come; I have learned in the past few days, there is a tradition that no house work should be done during the 12 days/nights between 25th December and 6th January to avoid losing last year's luck. ???
I don't think I could manage without doing ANY washing or clearing up, but it is interesting to note that there are people who feel those "old ways" should still be observed.
I am sure it feels great to include a major spring clean in the pre Christmas preparations, and to know all cupboards and picture rails etc, are spic and span, but what didn't get done before, must now, for tradition's sake, wait until after 12th Night, when we can begin again with renewed vigour and not have to worry about disturbing malevolent spirits.
However, while I lived in Leicester in the middle 70s, I was instructed, that doing washing on NYE or NYD might "wash someone out of the family," and given I had an adored aged Granny at the time, I have adhered to that maxim ever since!! Of course she did die eventually, but I wasn't guilty of washing her away! ;)

I didn't do any laundry for 4 days and only did one load on the 5th day. Laundry basket was not just full but piled up and overflowing onto the floor.

My maternal family are from the East Midlands and I will not do washing on New Years Day, supposedly will wash away good fortune for the year ahead. Didn’t know about New Year’s Eve though - oops!
I hope you’re now feeling better Mowsehowse. Sounds like yesterday turned into a lovely day Brigid, I think when things aren’t planned ages ahead they are sometimes more enjoyable.

Thank you PineTree.
I think I got off fairly lightly.... all the vaccinations I suppose.
It has left me a bit tired, but could be worse, no doubt. What does worry me is the effect it has had on my balance, which was compromised after the stroke, so I am praying it improves again.
-
Mowsr thanks for the contradictory traditions of luck guess which one i.ll chose next year !
There was a really bad occurance on the weds before Xmas in the household attached to mine
I refuse to associate it with anything anyone did wrong or bad luck or evil and tend to think some good will come out of unhappiness and it has already b

Whatever superstitions follow us through our time it is interesting hearing the different versions, no housework till 6th Jan, not sure about that but sometimes I wish a little elf would sneak in and do mine
12th night the decorations come down and that is probably why a spring clean is meant to be done ,
Since I had Covid first 2 weeks in November I have not felt right at all, I have no energy, not sure if it is post covid or not but my got up and go has got up and went, ( can't think who wrote that) and I don't like it at all, I have been diagnosed with gout in my little finger still giving me a lot of pain, and don't joke about drink, I don't drink very much at all.
Take care everyone
LM

I think it's very likely that it's the post Covid effects causing your lack of energy LM. I felt like I was twenty years older after recovering in other ways but the energy levels do increase over time so don't be too worried. Use the energy you have to do more enjoyable things than housework! ;)

Thank you Roobard.

I don't contribute to this topic but, has anyone else noticed the year is 2023 - where has all that time gone to?.
It's twenty three years since the "Millenium".
It's a very long time since I arrived in this world, it's a long time since I met my wife to be and it's also a long time since we, and still are, married- to each other I hasten to add.
I was thinking of asking the council for a blue plaque to be placed in the car park which is now on the site of the cinema where we met!. 8)
Anyway - a very happy, peaceful and healthy 2023 to you all.
:)

Thank you Llwyd
Yes, time is flying by
I met my husband on holiday 62 years ago, offered him a well now jelly sweet and he eas hooked, he says he hates them now, think he is joking, took him back on our first anniversary, no takers so I had to bring him home, only Joking

Just no housework on New Years day herejust checking my rota, getting cleaning done after New year will be difficult. Bins not due to be collected for another 2.5 weeks and tip closed Monday, Tuesday and I'm working Wednesday, Thursday so going to have to store the rubbish until Friday
-
Think we are all suffering from lack of bin collections, it is frustrating but we have to put up with it, ours is due on Tuesday, we can but hope.
LM
-
No change to our collections, our refuse collectors don't work Mondays anyway so we're not affected by bank holidays. Except I suppose at Easter, I guess they work extra to catch up then and presumably the same this Christmas.
-
Our recycling bin was emptied on the day they said this week - basically the day after it would have been due to have been done. There’s a very nice man who runs between every drop on our estate . He was sporting a new cap and a new fleece type jacket under his high vis. I think Santa had been. He’s so pleasant and will wave to the grandkids if they're watching out of the window.
Our normal bin is due to be collected on the normal day next week.
-
It is not a very nice job. Hats off to the people who do it for us. Not forgetting the drivers who show far more skill than I have.
-
I second that MH, this year they didn't come out in the snow, previous years they came out but late and still people complained, my thoughts were, would they like a member of their family out on treacherous roads, it was like an ice rink at the time
LM
-
Full marks to our binmen. Courteous and generally very helpful :)
-
Same here. And our bin women. :)
-
AND we'd all be lost without their excellent services.

Ours hasn't changed either, a three weekly collection is the norm so I go to the tip at least once a month to avoid a pile of stinking stuff mouldering for too long

Hi PT, Hope you are up to date either things.
I have been through the house, all washing done and that is it, no more housework today, hopefully not much tomorrow

Happy New Year everyone. I am still so tired after that night shift in Friday night even though I fell asleep before the bells.

Happy New Year to everyone. We had an early start ( for us ) of 6.30 am as we had three grandchildren for a sleepover last night and they are early risers!

Happy 2023 everyone :)

Happy New Year Everyone! :)
Sorry to hear you got Covid recently Mowsehowse. Thank goodness you have had jabs. Hopefully, you will feel totally recovered soon and balance back to normal.
It felt hectic over Christmas. Had a lovely Christmas meal at work! Had a wonderful time staying with family over Christmas.
Back at the grindstone now.
I was fast asleep too PT for the bells as I was up for work at the crack of dawn yesterday. Only an 8 hour shift so I could get buses home as they were to go off early.
I called at M&S at bus station on way home but they had sold out on some things I wanted. People seemed to be going mad with their shopping. The shop was packed although not as bad as pre Christmas. You wouldn't think the shops are only closed one day.
It was raining hard when I went to bed.
-
Happy New Year everybody.
-
Happy and more importantly a healthier 2023
I stayed up and went outside at midnight, only 1 neighbour out but a few minutes later a lad came out, we stood and had a chat, a lot of fireworks , I think this year they excelled the fireworks. Not so many years ago we had one neighbour who would run around the block with a saucepan and wooden spoon, it was very quiet
Keep safe
