Hello
My ggrandmother was a dressmaker in Drumshanbo, around 1900 or so.
Does anyone know of any dressmakers at that time?
She married in 1901 so my guess is she worked from around 1890 or so. She was born in 1871 - Jane Sophia Higginson.
Thanks so much!

Not sure I understand what you are asking. Often dressmaking was done from home and in those days almost all women probably did sewing either for employment or themselves/their family.
If this is the correct Jane Higginson them 1901 census says aged 23-

She married in 1903 not 1901-

Sister Harriet also listed as dressmaker in 1901 census-

Harriet & Jane had double wedding.
Jane likely started working at a younger age. My mother-in-law was born early 1900s and left school at 14 to work as a dressmaker in a shop in a nearby town.

Here were all the dressmakers in Co Leitrim in the 1901 census, including your GGM and her sister Harriet.

Yes, I understand now. Jane and Harriet probably worked from the house. I thought perhaps, they worked in a shop in town.

WOW! Thank you so much KG!!
I did have some of this information but not about the boarding school!
Harriet and her children are a great story - they all immigrated to Canada in the early 20's
Harriet's sister, Jane is my ggrandmother who moved to Scotland but Jane's grand daughter (my mum) also emigrated to Canada! As I have been working on the family tree, I found Harriet et al only about 6 years ago. My mum had no idea she had relatives in Canada!
Such a shame. Harriet died in 1952 but her children were still alive at the time my mother emigrated. They have all passed away now, of course but there is still a tail of the family in the wind. The eldest sister of Harriet and Jane also emigrated to Canada (popular place!) and her decendents are still with us. I have been in contact but they have neither information nor interest in the family history. Again. a shame.
