Title: how do i find 1886 crew lists from England to Nz

I am looking for a Sailor who jumped ship NZ abt 1886. No ships name. His name George JOHNSON possibly born 1869 He said Great Yarmouth England. Thanks lnr

If you are interested in the origins of George JOHNSON, and you see him in NZ, then start with the earliest evidence you have of him in NZ.

What is that?.....his name on...what?.....marriage record?....birth record?


"He said Great Yarmouth England"  When and where did George JOHNSON give this information about his origins?

Yarmouth or Great Yarmouth? Two different places - one on the Isle of Wight and one in Norfolk. Although confusingly, locals in Norfolk often abbreviate Gt Yarmouth to "Yarmouth"

Inr have you obtained the son's birth certificate to get both parents names?  From that you could obtain the marriage certificate which should give details of George's parents.

This would then give you a better idea of how to trace George in the UK.

sometimes one can check the Police Gazettes or Paperspast sites.   If NZ could also have mention in Australia.....broaden search a bit.....another option is use google ie Ships Lists + name of soul" "...NZ"

george johnson to nz from england abt 1886/7 according to various certs due to family folklore jumped ship, no name of ship. born abt 1869 Norfok England but had a cockney accent?Tried looking everywhere but need to be able to access ships crew lists. thanks lnr
