I am back after some time away whilst I tried to organise my bits of paper . I am now on the track of the Brownlie family, sometime of the Royal Hotel, Main Street, Wishaw as well as Quarry Row, Cambusnethan. I know that James Brownlie senior ,on 1861 census is noted as hotel keeper, whilst his son also James, born 1858 later lived at Quarry Row, Cambusnethan. James Junior also sometimes used the surname of Docherty which has complicated my research. James Junior seems to have lived a complicated life. I would love to tie up a few more loose ends. As each door closes another opens. Thanks to you all

What would you specifically like help with finding out?

James junior was a distant relative of mine, in fact my G, Grandmother's son by her second marriage, he claimed to have served in various Scottish Regiments, seemingly total fiction as loyalty to your regiment was everything. I would like to discover why he flitted between the names of Brownlie and Docherty as his Mother's maiden name seems to have been Hamilton, so no obvious connection there. I have found out that his daughter, Annie, emigrated to Australia whilst his other two children remained in Scotland. James died in a lunatic asylum in Stirling in 1953, so his life story remains a mystery to me. Did something happen to him in his early life to influence his choices.
I flit between sorrow and anger at his life, so I feel I need to understand the man, who married my Grandmother better..

Could you please include links to any previous threads about your Brownlies, to prevent duplication of effort?

Your post rings a bell with me and I seem to remember giving you some information about this family already. It may help if you give what information you have, rather than asking members to duplicate previous research.

There needs to be some background info. with names (Brownlie/Docherty)/dates/places/occ. & anything else known?
A timeline is always an idea to help yourself & others willing to help.
