Isabella Ellwood (born 1869) is my great grandmother. She had a daughter Agnes Jane Ellwood (born 1895) who is my grandmother. I have no idea if Ellwood is Isabella's maiden name, but John Ellwood (born 1832) had a daugter named Isabella who was also born 1869. All seem to be from the Penrith area. Isabella has two potential spouses, George Ralph Wataon (born 1859) or Joseph Ellwood (born 1876) who just might be her brother ???? Any help would be appreciated :-)

Agnes Jane Ellwood - born Dec.1895 Penrith - has a mmn of Burrell.
She was baptised 1/11/1895 Penrith, dau. of Joseph Ellwood and Isabella.
Joseph Ellwood married Isabella Burrell Jun.qtr.1892 Penrith.
So, Isabella was Isabella Burrell not Ellwood. Looks like husband Joseph Ellwood was bc.1861 and died Sept.qtr.1895 Penrith shortly before Agnes was born.

Looks like they had a son Joseph Ellwood born and died Dec.1892 Penrith followed by Alfred Pearson Ellwood born 1894 and baptised 15/4/1894 Penrith plus Agnes Jane 1895. In 1901 census both Alfred and Agnes shown as Watson rather than Ellwood.

Yikes, that creates another (worse?) Issue for me. I had Ellwood as her maiden name, and she married my grandfather John William Troughton (born 1891) to become Agnes Troughton. They had Noreen, Doris, Muriel and Jack. Beginning to see how confusing this can all get. Never sure who to believe (ancestry vs myheritage vs FamilySearch)

Do you mean the trees that people put on these sites?
They are only as good as the research done to produce them.
The individual sites can host a 100% accurate tree or a complete rubbish tree and anything in between, they do not check anything for accuracy.

GRO shows Ellwood as mother's maiden name.
But, I have on my tree several children born to a women through her second marriage. Some were registered with her real maiden name, but some were registered with her first husband's surname name instead. Possibly misunderstood when asked the question " What was your previous surname?"
But it looks like Agnes Jane's maiden name was Ellwood, it's Isabella who is the puzzle

The Watson surname appears for Agnes on a census. That often happens for stepchildren. What you see for 1841 to 1901 censuses are the enumerator's form, copied from the individual house holders forms.
It depends how fully the head of household had completed the form. If he just put his own full name, then followed by the forenames of wife and children / stepchildren, and did not differentiate between children and stepchildren, just listed them all as children, the enumerator would by default give them all the same surname as the head of household.

Apolgies if I am getting confused (easily done :) ) but based on her daughter's birth below I think Isabella's maiden name was Burrell and based on Isabella's second marriage in 1899 her father's name was William Burrell :-\

Agnes' maiden name, was indeed Ellwood as has been stated more than once. It's just her parentage that has been the issue i.e. her mother Isabella was not an Ellwood by birth. Agnes Jane Ellwood was not illegitimate - she was, as I stated earlier, born to a Joseph Ellwood and Isabella Burrell who married 1892 Penrith. Her mother, Isabella Ellwood nee Burrell married George Ralph Watson 1899 as a widow, and states her own father was a William Burrell.
The trouble with the trees I've seen on Ancestry is that proper research hasn't been done. It's been assumed that Agnes' father was George Ralph Watson and that her mother was an Isabella Ellwood. If they'd bothered to check out the marriage between them they'd have seen that Isabella Ellwood was a widow, not a single lady, and likewise, if someone had bothered to get Agnes Jane's birth certificate they'd have seen that her parents were Joseph Ellwood and Isabella, nee Burrell.
Incidentally, Isabella Burrell was bp.30/4/1865 Penrith, dau. of William and Barbara. The surname has been mistranscribed in FindMyPast baptism index as 'Birrill'.

You are going to need the marriage certificate of Joseph Ellwood and Isabella Burrell who married in the June quarter 1892 Penrith. At the moment we only have Joseph's name and that when he died 1895 he was shown as bc.1861 (death entry shows aged 34) but I can't find anyone to fit this in Cumberland. So, where/when was he born, what was his occupation, name of his father.
You are going to need more information to enable you to follow the Ellwood line.

Well done, cuffie 81. I no longer have access to newspapers alas but had been looking at that Joseph Ellwood this afternoon. Could find no link to Westmorland though - however, Joseph's address of Eamont Bridge when he married Isabella would definitely appear to confirm it.
His baptism:
Joseph Ellwood (birth Sept.1861) was baptised 13/4/1862 at Bolton, Westmorland, son of Joseph and Mary.
