Hi everyone :)
I'm trying to decipher the surname of the second passenger on this ship's manifest (below Louisa Stamp). The newspaper of the day printed her name as Catherine Ringrose, but I can't seem to find any mention of this name in the Western Australian records after arriving on this ship (the Minero) from London in 1884.
For the record, Louisa Stamp was my 2x G Grandmother, but I'm trying to research her shipmates in an effort to find out more about her.
Cheers,
Rob.

Welcome to Rootschat :D
Can you tell us a bit more about Louisa? Do you know when and where she was born?
I cannot find any Louisa Stamp travelling to Australia from the UK in 1884. She was presumably a married woman at the time, do you know her husband's name or the names of any of her children?
The ship name Minero does not appear, the closest is Minerva. Is the ship name correct?

Thanks Kay, I'll stick with this thread for the moment.
Just doing some investigating.

Hi Girl Guide :)
Yes, the Minero left London 08 Apr 1884 and arrived Fremantle 01 Jul 1884. Louisa was single at the time, emigrating to Australia through a Crown Agent called Felgate & Co. I've been trying to find any Felgate records that might still exist, but no luck so far. We have plenty of records of her once she arrived in Australia, but nothing conclusive on the UK end. She was born in London sometime between 1861 and 1869, according to her Australian children's birth certs. We believe this is her entry in the 1871 England census:

Why do our ancestors like to hide themselves from us? :D
Cheers,
Rob.

Your image is from Ancestry Western Australia Passengers
....Minero.....1884.....

Can you please list all the information on the the marriage certificate
STAMP Catherine marr. WILLIAMS John Anthony @ Northampton
year of marriage 1884 year of registration 1886 # 6427
Was the marriage registered late? Why?
Added...no, that is Catherine, not your Louisa....but interesting to see another STAMP in WA.
When and where did your Louisa marry...to whom?

I can't view the Ancestry record. Is it the same as this one?
1871 Living at Caledonian Crescent, St James Clerkenwell, Holborn, London & Middlesex
Samuel and Louise Nash with children Ellen J, Henry S, Herbert, Louisa and William W. All children born in Middlesex.
Registration district Holborn
Piece number 391
Folio 8
Page 10
There is a marriage in MQ 1876 Pancras 1b 127 of a John Edmund Stamp to a Louisa Nash.
However further investigation shows it can't be this family as the Louisa born in 1868 is still there in the 1891 census.
Perhaps you can give me details of the 1871 census so that I can find the one you have. Head of household's name, birth year and place of birth should do.

1876 marriage of Louisa Nash and John Edmund Stamp - both have been previously married, both fathers are deceased and no names offered. And both are deemed to be full age. :)

Hi Wivenhoe :)
Louisa had 4 children here in Australia with John Carter, who was born in New South Wales around 1852. They were never married because he was still married to a Sarah Saxby in NSW, whom he also had 4 children with and he subsequently abandoned all of them.
Louisa and John's children were named John Thomas, Frances Lewis Louisa, Nora Minnie and Edward John Carter.
Cheers,
Rob.

This is a surname that can be corrupted to Stemp, Stunt, Stent etc. etc. I can't seem to find anything likely that follows on from the census record that you gave me.
You can spend hours searching and come up with possibilities but without concrete information it will be hard to find the correct Louisa.
Perhaps other Rootschatters will have some ideas as to how to find her.

You are right. On several Australian certs she is listed as Louisa Stemp.
We think this is the same Louisa in the 1881 England census...14 years old now compared to 4 years old in 1871:
Name: Louisa Stamp
Age: 14
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1867
Relationship to Head: Servant
Gender: Female

Reginald Stone 1
Louisa Stamp 14
Working as a 14 year old servant for the Stone family in St Pancras, London. We couldn't find any death or marriage records for this Louisa, and she doesn't show up in any other England censuses. So we're going with this one :) 3 years after this census, age 17, she hopped a ship to Australia for a new life. It would be really nice to know for sure though. :)
Thank you very much for your input!
Cheers,
Rob.

Could you double check the name of the ship please? The closest name that came up was Minerva, putting in Minero only produces a list of likely names of people.
-
Definitely the Minero. As wivenhoe said, page 44 (of 90)

Search for arrive 1884 Fremantle (exact)
in the Western Australia, Australia, Crew and Passenger Lists, 1852-1930 set.
-
Yes. On Ancestry (at least), the manifest wasn't indexed, so a search for Minero or the passenger names came up empty.
On Trove, there are snippets of when the Minero left London and when it arrived in Australia. I've attached the top of page 1 of the Minero's manifest.
Cheers,
Rob.

Unfortunately it looks as though Find My Past does not have that record. I tried various ways but nothing comes up in connection with 1884 and Freemantle.
