Title: William and Florence Macrae - NSW
Post by: mazzie74 on Monday 21 November 22 07:42 GMT (UK)
Hi

William MacRae (unsure of birth or origin) married in 1905 to Florence Ellen Stupples (born England 1883) in South Africa:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KDCG-5XH

I have found 1 son born in South Africa 1907 - William Donald Macrae:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6NH9-LGMF

They must have emigrated to Australia not long after.

I think I have found the births of 2 daughters in New South Wales (Rhoda Margaret Macrae 1911, and Irene Florence MacRae 1913):

https://familyhistory.bdm.nsw.gov.au/lifelink/familyhistory/search/result?6

William and Florence divorced around 1922.

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/16004773?searchTerm=%22Macrae%20v%20macrae%22

I have found 2 possible re-marriages for Florence:

1. James G. Harriss - North Sydney 1924.

2. Henry Palmer - Glen Innes 1926.

There is an engagement notice for Irene Florence MacRae in 1938 to Kenneth Walker Dun:

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/229137236?searchTerm=macrae%20%22centennial%20park%22

It says she is the younger daughter of W. MacRae of Centennial Park.

I have found a possible death of William MacRae in Sydney district 1958 (based on his father was called Donald, and he named his son William Donald).

I am looking for the death places and years for:

William MacRae (possibly 1958);

Florence Ellen MacRae (Harris / Palmer?);

Irene Florence Dun (nee MacRae);

Kenneth Walker Dun;

Rhoda Margaret MacRae.

If anybody can help I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Darin (England).

Fantastic Wivenhoe.

His son was also a Policeman.

Strange that they still mention Florence.

Thanks again.

I'm assuming Florence is the daughter of Richard STUPPLES and Prudence, birth registered as Florrie STUPPLES, Thanet Kent in Sep qtr 1882 (2a/910).

There is a passenger list for her going to Natal on 20 May 1903.

Unfortunately, using those parents names I can't see a death in NSW. Of course, the informant may not have known her parent's names. Will keep looking.

Strange that they still mention Florence.

The reports on trove of the divorce only state that a decree nisi was granted. I can't see a report of a decree absolue. It is possible they didn't go ahead with the divorce.

There are a few possiblites for Florence /Ellen MACRAE deaths in NSW.

Modified to add:
Though I'd forgotten the engagement notice for Irene only mentions "W MACRAE" not "Mr and Mrs" or similar.  :-\

Thank you for that.

You are correct with her parents (Richard and Prudence).

Thanks again

Rhoda Margaret MACRAE married Sydney Burns BARNARY in 1952 registered at Sydney (22390/1952 )

I think it's a typo on the NSW BMD index and should be Sydney Burns BARNARD

Sydney Burns BARNARD died in 1984, "late of Guildford" (Sydney). I can't see a death for Rhoda so it must be after Nov 1992. She was born in 1911, so I assume she is not still living. Will keep  looking for a death notice, but can't readily see one in Sydney.

Added - there is a family tree on Ancestry that has her death on the Gold Coast, Queensland, but no date or source. The same tree has a death for Irene WALKER DUN in 2010, but again, no source.

That's brilliant Gerry and Maddy

Thank you very much.

Following on the Army record search, I see that Rhoda MacRae and Sydney Burns Barnard also have their service records (with photos).

Absolutely brilliant

Thanks again

Some info from Trove NSW Police Gazette.

William MACRAE (senior) appointed Probationary Constable No 8988 in the NSW Police on 25th June 1909.

Then appointed Ordinary Constable No 8988 12 months later on 25th June 1910.

William MACRAE had been a Police Constable in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa when he married Florence Stupples in 1905.

William Donald MACRAE was appointed a NSW Probationary Constable in 1928.
