The Late Ninian S Forbes
the China Mail which, coming via the Siberian Railway, has just arrived in Greenock, brings an account of the death of Mr Ninian S Forbes, Greenock, who was accidentally shot in Tientein on Sunday 16th February. Mr Forbes was 24 years of age, and formally resided at 31 Finnart St. He was for six years in the employment of Messrs J and J Denholm.
an inquest was held on the 17th instant at the British Consulate General concerning the deplorable accident, which resulted in the death of Mr Ninian Stuart Forbes on Saturday night last at the officers mess of the Middlesex Regiment. The evidence shows that a British Officer was explaining the mechanism of a Winchester repeating rifle to an officer belonging to the Imperial German Forces; the rifle was believed to be unloaded, and the mechanism is such that, if it should be loaded, the pilling of the lever ought to extract a cartridge in the same way that it extracts an empty cartridge case if the trigger has been pulled. The lever of the rifle was pulled at lest a dozen times, when suddenly a cartridge, which must have been in the magazine,, and which had not hitherto exploded, went off. Just at the very moment that the cartridge was fired in this unexpected manner, Mr Forbes, who had been moving from place to place in the ante room of the officers mess,, happened to get in line of fire. The bullet severed the jugular vein and although Dr Shaw was present, did everything that was possible, death ensued painlessly a few minutes after the unfortunate young man, who was a frequent and valued guest, was struck.

James B is James Boston Forbes born 3.4.1889. He became a merchant seaman and there is a record and photograph of him on Findmypast. Think this could be him in 1930 US census.

Death of Robert Stuart Forbes
A wide circle of friends will regret to learn of the death of Mr Robert Stewart Forbes, which took place yesterday at his residence, 31 Finnart St, after a comparatively short illness. Mr Forbes, who had been a resident of Greenock for over twenty years, was a partner in the firm of Messrs Wallace and Forbes, coal exporters, Glasgow, and was well known in business circles in the West of Scotland. Although taking no part in the public affairs of Greenock, he identified himself with quite a number of local institutions, such as Greenock Burns Club, (of which he was a much-appreciated member), Ardgowan Bowling Club and the golf club. He was a valued member of the West Kirk, of which he was one of the managers. Mr Forbes was of a genial disposition, and was held in much esteem by all with whom he came into contact. Deceased, who was fifty tree hears of age, has left a widow and several of a family.

Just some further information on James Boston Forbes and a request for more help .
James may not be the person in America on the 1930 Census as that person is listed as a packer at a bakery and James was a Engineer. That James was married to a Florence and had a daughter Florence and he is still there in 1940. But anything is possible with James .
In 1909 James married first in Scotland Annie Fairweather Purdon and they had 1 daughter who died 1910--can not find other children . But they are later divorced . ( Report in the Scotsman 21/7/1920 page 7) On the ww1 Pension Ledgers he is listed as a Chief Engineer and kok is a Jessie Forbes but I can not find a Marriage cert.
James dies in New Zealand 4/6/1941--he certainly travels. On 1940 ships record to new Zealand he is travelling with jessie--and the address they give in Uk is north House,Upton Newark . this is the home of his sister Annie who married Thomas Abbott.
So grateful for any information and I wonder if there were any other children.
many Thanks

There are no more deaths of Forbes with mother's maiden name Purdon in the deaths index at Scotland's People, and no births of Forbes with mmn Purdon on FreeBMD. There remains a chance that there was/were (an) additional child(ren) who died during the gap when mmns are not yet indexed (about 1940 to 1973). The 1921 census, when it comes, should clarify that.
On the ww1 Pension Ledgers he is listed as a Chief Engineer and kok is a Jessie Forbes but I can not find a Marriage cert.
There is a marriage of James Boston Forbes to Jessie Ramsay in New Zealand in 1939.

Thank you for that marriage. No wonder I could not find it in Scotland.
-
Marion Simpson Forbes' first husband, George Livingston Hamilton, was my first cousin twice removed.
According to the The National Archives (UK), Marion filed for divorce in 1922. Unfortunately, I don't have the actual records.
I haven't been able to find a record of she and Gerald E V Abbott's marriage. Or of Ida Grizel Hamilton's first marriage.
