Hi,
I notice that there is a Hendra Cottage near Madron, these days.
Does anyone know if there was a Hendra Farm in that area?
I have seen some records that suggest a Thomas Baynard lived at Hendra, Madron in the 17th Century.
I would be glad to hear if anyone knows anything about this.
Thanks,
Gordon

Hi Gordon,
I was able to find a Hendra Farmhouse on GoogleMaps:
It is located under Madron:

The farm is about 1.33 km away from Madron:

According to themovemarket.com, the property costs £832,000 in today’s money. In the 17th Century, it would have been about £7060. In those days, you could have bought 1100 Horses, 1300 cows, 8800 stones of wool, and 1850 quarters of wheat.

Doesn't actually say Hendra Farm, just "Hendra" on this 1876 map.

With just a very quick look, the earliest reference I can see in newspapers to Hendra Farm Madron is 1905, though there may be early ones.

Of possible interest:
"To the Editor of the Royal Cornwall Gazette
SIR,
I request the favor of your contradicting a mistake that appeared in your paper of the 29th ult. in the case of Baynard against Jacka. - Instead of "the Plaintiff is a Farmer and rents some lands in Hendra belonging to Sir Rose Price, Bart. near Penzance;" it should have been "the Plaintiff is a Farmer residing at Hendra near Penzance." - I am the sole proprietor of the Freehold, descended through many generations, and it is to the present moment unincumbered and owes neither suit nor service to Lord or Manor.
I am sir, your humble servant,
THOMAS BAYNARD
Hendra, April 7th, 1823"
Saturday, Apr. 12, 1823, Royal Cornwall Gazette
Modified to add:
There is another letter to the editor by Thomas BAYNARD following this one refuting a claim made by someone calling themselves "A lover of truth", arguing semantics. I can't find the other letter, nor the item that started the letter writing - there are some issues of the Royal Cornwall Gazette missing around this time.
-
Certainly.
Thanks,
Gordon

You possibly have seen this already - a will for a Thomas BAYNARD, yeoman of Madron 1733
https://kresenkernow.org/SOAP/detail/9620a9a0-146e-471e-9923-223c64ba581a/
Another of 1755

You can see transcriptions here, though from what I can see they don't mention Hendra specifically

Hendra actually means 'ancient farm' and there are several others in Cornwall e.g. off the Gunwalloe road on the Lizard peninsula, another between Camelford and Boscastle, another near Pelynt to name but three, in different areas of Cornwall. In times past, the locals would not have called it Hendra farm, just Hendra.
So it is a fairly safe call to say that Hendra, as marked on the 1876 map, is the same place that Thomas Baynard lived in 1733.
