Hi
I have recently stumbled upon an 1839 Derby baptism of "Henry, son of Daniel Lucas (China Painter) and Maria Whimbell (Silk Worker)"
This was quite a surprise but it could feasibly be either Daniel Lucas Senior or his son (of the same name). They were both china painters (landscape scenes).
Need help to identify who Maria Whimbell was. No luck so far.
Any help would be most welcome !
Thanks

Is he the Henry in 1841 census with Daniel?
1841/199/78.
Henry Lucas 3 yrs.
Also is this the birth?
Henry Demilt Lucas? December quarter 1838, Derby.
Where do you have him in later years?

Hi
The Henry Lucas living with Daniel in 1841 is the son of Daniel's daughter Millicent (also living with Daniel) and his birth is the Demilt one.
So we have another Henry. I suspect Daniel junior is the father but would prefer more evidence.
How common is the name "Whimbell" I wonder ?

There are Wombwells in Derbyshire so perhaps variations of that name.
Is there not a civil birth registration for Henry then?
Does he not appear in a census later?
-
Whimbell with that exact spelling dont come up in searches on Ancestry much
For that particular baptism ancestry has transcribed the mother's name as Maria Whimbele and as maria Columbell
-
On mine it's transcribed as Maria Whembele (Mary Whembele)
A Mary Whimbles marries in York in 1844.
Do we know what happens to little Henry?
-
There are also Whewell/Whawell surnames
-
Just in case this is Maria - Nottinghamshire 1841 census has a
Maria Wombwell 30
Matilda Wombwell 11
1851 as lodgers
Edward Stell 35
Maria Stell 41
Matilda Woonbell 19
Marriage Sep 1841 Nottingham
Edward Steel
Maria Wombwell
James Woonbell 1

What information is given on the birth certificate of Henry Demilt Lucas re birthdate?
I can’t explain why Maria is written as mother if she is not, but I wonder if Henry is this one and is baptised again later as Clarke when Millicent marries. (According to a published tree).

Henry Collumbell died aged 0, Mar qtr 1840 Derby 9 444.

There is a 20 year old Maria Collumbell, silk winder, in Normanton Rd, Derby in the 1841 census.
A different Maria Collumbell died in St Alkmund, Derby, Sep qtr 1842 aged 46.

That’s an interesting find :)
Looking at the baptism record, it would be an odd ‘C’ - there is no curve at the top of the letter. There is, though, a similar letter formation at the beginning of ‘Curzon Street’.
So poor Henry perhaps died.

A big thank you to all respondents to my enquiry, this has been most helpful.
Best wishes to all.
