Title: Joseph Harrison mother's name
Post by: EuniceM on Thursday 10 November 22 14:49 GMT (UK)
My great grand father Joseph Harrison married in 1863 my great grand mother Sarah Tindal
at Cockermouth in the parish of Brigham. On the marriage certificate, Joseph Harrison is said to be
the son of William Harrison husbandman.

I am searching for the name of his mother

If we go by the census taken after their marriage, he was born in 1841 at Cockermouth.

But in the 1841,1851,1861 census , I just cannot find a Joseph Harrison, born in 1841, who is a
member of a family headed by William Harrison.
Hoping someone can help me.  Thank you in advance.

This looks as if it could be his birth certificate information that would give you the name of his mother. Joseph Harrison - Cockermouth-March1841 qtr- Vol 25-Page 97

There is a Mary Harrison with Joseph in Cockermouth who seems to fit.

I wonder if this Joseph is the one living with Mary and 2 other children in 1841:

Brigham Row, Crosthwaite, Cockermouth, Cumberland:
Mary Harrison aged 25 (born c.1816)
Thomas Harrison aged 12 (born c.1829)
Henry Harrison aged 9 (born c.1832)
Joseph Harrison aged under 1 (born c.1841)

In 1851, they are still living in Brigham Row, but this time with Margaret Harrison, unmarried, born c.1791, who is the head of household. Thomas and Henry could be the youngest children of Margaret, but Joseph seems too young to have been - Margaret would have been 50 years old when he was born - so could he have been unmarried Mary's illegitimate son? They are all described as born in Keswick, Cumberland, but logically Joseph was probably born in Cockermouth, where he was living as an infant.

EDIT: David beat me to it!

Thank you very much Queenie, David ,Paco.

I have the birth certificate of a Joseph Harrison born in January 1841 at Keswick , son of
Mary Harrison spinster living in Brigham Row.
I thought i had the wrong birth certificate, Now that the three of you found the same
information, it seems I have the right one.

But what sent me in the wrong direction was that he names William Harrison as his father.
      at his marriage.

      Thank you again.

Please Remember that there is a Brigham about two miles from Cockermouth and also a hamlet called Brigham within the confines of Keswick. Keswick came within the Cockermouth Registration District.

The information on the marriage certificate is useful for anyone on this forum in assisting you with your research.

A marriage certificate is the one document where the bride and groom are the authors of information recorded about themselves.

It is useful to note which parties are literate.

If you have an image of the marriage certificate, with other marriages on the same page, see what names appear for those witnesses.

Witnesses might be related to the bride or groom. If their names appear more often for marriages you might suspect that they are connected with the church and just available as witnesses at the time.

What church did they marry in?

What ages for Joseph and Sarah

Thank you very much for your sound advice.

I have a copy of the marriage certificate given at the GRO.

Joseph Harrison was about 22-23 years old , said to be a husbandman, from Flimby Hall ,son of
a William Harrison also a husbandman, and could write his name.

Sarah Tindal was 17 years old from Cockermouth and signed with an X. daughter of John
         Tindal, carrier.

The Witnesses were John Tindal, Sarah's brother. he could write his name.
and Eliza Denwood she signed with a X

The marriage took place at Cockermouth in the parish Of Brigham on the 28th of March 1863

Is it possible to be a husbandman at 20-21 years old ?

                       Regards

               Hi everyone

At the marriage of Joseph Harrison - Sarah Tindal

Joseph Harrison was living at that time In Flimby Hall.

Is Flimby Hall far from Brigham ? where the marriage took place.

                              Thank you.

Hi to the RootsChat member who is reading this post.

I've found a Joseph Harrison in the 1861 census living in the household

of Matthew Douglas a farmer in High House Distington Whitehaven District  Cumberland .

Joseph as a farm servant, 20 years old ,unmarried. and born in Brigham.

I am wondering if this Joseph Harrison is my Joseph Harrison ?

Jumping in here

Joseph  probably said his father was William harrison because illigitimacy was frowned upon

But if he did know his birth father he might have been William + might have been a husbandman too ...but different surname

If his siblings married it would be interesting to see who they named as their  father

# .but agree that the others on 1851 are more likely to be uncles
Joseph is listed under 35 year old laundress Mary so could easily be her son and grandson of Margaret

      Hi brigidmac

Thank you very much for reading my post.
Your opinion is very plausible, i think.

I believe this Joseph Harrison had no siblings.
Like you say the others in the 1851 census were more likely his uncles.

It looks like it will not be easy to continue the search of my Joseph Harrison's ancestry.
Also it is a very common name in this part of Cumberland.
           (Cockermouth and Keswick)

2 ways that sometimes lead to birth father's name
1 is if a single mother took him to court to pay maintenance . Look for bastardy court records or affiliation orders

Or DNA test which might throw up links to people descended from an ancestor with a common surname which is not on your tree

Happy New Year 2023 to the RootsChat member who is reading this post.

I am a bit surprised that no descendant of the great family of my Joseph Harrison
and my Sarah Tindal married in Brigham Church , Cockermouth on the 28th of March 1863

As I am getting close to the mark (read 50 000 times) that no descendant have come up yet
with an extensive search on the origin and genealogy of our Joseph Harrison.

But I am still hoping as I have time on my side...maybe in 2023  :)

                                EuniceM  ;)
