Title: Wards Family originally from Sanday Orkney
Post by: Shebe on Tuesday 08 November 22 18:51 GMT (UK)
I would like to make contact with possible family connections originally from Sanday.  The family names in my Wards tree include Cormack, Gore or Goar and from the New Zealand Wards Branch Foubister.

Any information greatly appreciated.  The furthest back I can go is 1769  Thomas Ward born 17th October 1769 described as Farmer Married Janet Goar born 19th March 1778.

Many thanks for your helpful reply.  I am in fact a member of Tayside Family History so I shall explore your suggestions to take this a bit further. We have been to Orkney but not yet to Sanday although intend to visit next time.

Where did the marriage take place & can you give names/dates/places of children's baptisms in order which may help in identifying their parents?

Thank you for getting back to me.  I shall look out the sparse information I have and we may be able to take it from there.  Almost positive the marriage was in Sanday I became a bit lost thereafter.  I have people staying with me until after Christmas can I get back to you after that? Any help appreciated.

Enjoy your visitors & come back when you're free  :)

The furthest back I can go is 1769  Thomas Ward born 17th October 1769 described as Farmer Married Janet Goar born 19th March 1778.
Where was the date of birth 17 Oct 1769 for Thomas Ward indicated as I haven't been able to locate a baptism anywhere in Scotland?

I've found the baptism of Janet...

GOAR JANNET - 19/03/1778
JAMES GOAR/JANNET MUIR FR374 (Parents)
026 20 / 59 SANDAY (LADY, CROSS AND BURNESS)

I can't find a marriage for the couple, the baptisms of their children should indicate whether they were married or not?

I've found 4 Baptisms (Index attached below)...

Robert - 1802 (May be a different couple as there's a gap of almost 17 yrs prior to the next
baptism)...or there's quite a few missing in between?

David - 1819
Jannet - 1821 (Twin)
Mary - 1821 (Twin)

Thank you for your help. Following some of the information, advice and papers given me from NZ and Canada. This is what I now believe.

Robert Wards married Elspeth Cormack. Sanday Orkney
Their son Thomas Wards is my 2x Gt Grandfather married Janet Goar. Sanday Orkney
Their son Thomas Wards married Helen or Ellen Wards. Her father, James Wards mother ?? not known at present Orkney
Their son William Wards married Christina McBeth at Laurencekirk, Kincardinshire in 1871 her father Wm McBeth, mother Margaret Flockhart.
Their daughter, my grandmother Helen Wards married my Grandfather Wm Watson Brown (born Wm Watson) at St Vigeans, Arbroath Angus.
There is so much more I would like to learn of the Orkney Family.
When I started this years ago I didn't take a note of where I got some of my information but it's all a learning curve.
