My late uncle William Maher was born in Dún Laoghaire, Ireland in 1911. He married in 1937 and emigrated to England sometime soon after that. I am unsure of the date he joined the Royal Navy but know he was on two ships the Ark Royal and the Dorsetshire. He told stories of being torpedoed twice so I am assuming it was 1941 on the Ark Royal and 1942 on the Dorsetshire. How could I go about finding out more about his Royal Navy career? Rootschatters have been a great help to me in finding out more about William's father also William who was a local hero In Dún Laoghaire for saving some people during the sinking of the RMS Leinster on 10 October 1918.

Service records for all personnel serving after 1920 are still with the MOD.
See: https://www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records
There is a fee of £30, and you will need a copy of his Death Certificate.
These records are NOT online anywhere.

Thank you Kiltaglassan. Will check that out.

The MOD are going through the process of transferring WW2 records to the national archive in London. If the records have been trnasfered then its a free FOI request rather than £30 and a death certificate.
P.s I have a quite a bit of info on Williams fathers military service including his service records, if you are interested.

Good evening Jim82
I am just seeing your post from 2 Dec 2022 now. Not getting emails anymore about replies. I would love to see some more on William seniors military service. I never met him but his son also William was my uncle by marriage and such a wonderful character. I have gone off on tangents at the moment on the family history but would love more about the Mahers.

Hi Ourgang
I'm more than happy to share what I know about him and also have a copy of his service records. He was a prisoner of war in the Boer War. I'd love to know any information you have on him that is missing from what I have. I know almost nothing about him post 1920. If you could P.M me your email I will send through what I have.
Best wishes
Jim
