Title: How do you Solve a Problem Like Maria?
Post by: Suffolkgal on Tuesday 25 October 22 16:37 BST (UK)
I have a baptism certificate for Mary Teresa Baker, daughter of Michael Baker and Nancy Iris Baker (formerly Smith), who were "lawfully married".  Mary Teresa aka Maria Theresa was apparently born on 10 December 1928 and baptised in St Patrick's Church, Soho Square, by Rev B.P. Murphy, on 11 March 1936.  Firstly, Michael and Nancy were not married; Secondly, Michael was Jewish, possibly from Russia and, I suspect, his surname was not originally Baker.  I am wondering if the original entry might give any more information; did either parent leave a signature or an address/occupation?  According to an account written by a family member in the 1940s, Nancy left home when the baby was three so a bit of a mystery as to why the Jewish father would have her baptised in a Catholic Church eight years later.  I would be grateful if someone could look this entry up for me or tell me where I might find the original record.  Thank you in advance.

Have you rung the church as that would seem the best way forward.  They would be able to tell you where the records can be viewed & answer your question re signatures etc

Google shows phone number as 020 7437 2010

I know this is a year out but is it Mary’s birth registration or just a coincidence?

Will definitely look into that.  Thank you, not sure how I missed it as there is a suggestion that her mother originated from the Manchester area!!!

The maiden surname of that child's mother was WALSH.

Was she raised by her father?  That sounds to me like a baptism after being admitted to an orphanage or something similar.

There is only one birth registration for a Nancy Iris SMITH between 1880 and 1912 and that was in Cheshire.

SMITH, NANCY  IRIS
Mother's maiden surname: MUTCH

That Nancy Iris Smith is on a Family Tree on Ancestry, she married a man named Evans and is on the 1939 Register.

The maiden name will only show on births more than 100 years ago. However if you know what the name is and put it in your search criteria then it will show.

Thank you all for your replies.  I have eliminated all these suggestions, though, as none tie in with any of the information I have from the family memoir.  All rather vague and, perhaps, not all totally true so I think I'm on a hiding to nothing with this one.
