I have a 3x greatgrandfather and he is named
Colextor/Colexter Brown and 1845 Marylebone/,Paddington.
His mother surname is
Carnzer/Caranzu/karnser.It is spelt many different ways depending who wrote it down, obviously how it has been interpreted over the years. I can go back to the 1600s on records for this name. My point is the first name Colextor/ter, either Spanish or possibly Portuguese taking into account the surname as well. No one in my family knows where this Christian name came from.
Any help greatly appreciated

I agree with JenB's suggestion that Colextor/ter could well be a variation of that name.
As to why his family gave him that name, you might never know. Sometimes babies were named after wealthy uncles, friends, ministers, employers, politicians, royals, etc. According to Wikipedia, there have also been four popes with that name.

Yes,many babies were named after the French stronghold of Verdun, in the First World War .
The French troops were on their knees but fought on ,very brave .
Perhaps some event was the inspiration .

It's hard not knowing, isn't it, Sue? If you're like me, that kind of question always niggles away at me.
My grandmother's first and middle names were the first and last names of her parents' first landlady in Canada. The landlady was really good to my great-grandparents and they thought highly of her. But if my mother hadn't told me that story, there's no way I ever would have figured that one out.

Many of my family came from Toledo, Ohio. Many more came from the South. In one of those Southern families - with NO discernable connection to anyone in Ohio - they named a daughter the first and middle name: Toledo Ohio. How 'bout THEM apples?
