Can i have some estimations on when this photograph may have been taken .it was in Manchester and i suspect the 1930's or so.
Thank you
-
30's looks about right to me:
-
I think this is a Leyland Badger, first introduced in 1929. This is an early model because by 1935 the style of the cab had changed to a square side window as seen in this image
-
Did they do 6x4 Badgers? Could GG be a Glasgow reg?
-
Thank you to both japeflakes and Andy J2002 for your replies.
It gives me a rough timeline.
Cheers

Could GG be a Glasgow reg?
Yes - see https://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/registrations/gg.htm
It was in use from Jun 1930 to Feb 1933, but that will only define the "not earlier than" for the photo. Assuming the numbers were issued consecutively from 1 to 9999, this one (7200) is likely to have been issued some time in 1932.
If it's important to you, you may be able to get details of the original registration from the Kithead Trust:

Excellent information, many thanks arthurk

It wasn't taken during WW2 - the headlights would have had blackout cowls, and until about 1948 films were unavailable in the shops for amateur photographers.
But I remember seeing a lorry like this, with the round cabside opening, delivering to a nearby shop in Lancashire, in the 1940s after the War.

Thank you Harry

I don't think that was the case. My father was a keen amateur photographer, and the pictures I've inherited include a number taken during his WW2 service (Army, Northern Ireland).
What does occur to me, though, is a question that might relate to the date and location: where were Cowan & Co based?
The original post says this was taken in Manchester, yet the truck has a Glasgow registration. So, were Cowans from Glasgow but delivering to Manchester? Or were Cowans in Manchester and using a truck that had been registered in Glasgow?
If the latter, that suggests the truck may have been secondhand when they got it, which might push the date of the photo on a bit. Or could the basic Leyland chassis have gone to a truck builder in Scotland, then been sold and registered there?

Sorry for going off-topic, but the unavailabilty of roll films in the shops (in Lancashire) is something I remember clearly. Maybe they still sold them in the Naafi - a neighbour in the RAF took some snaps of my family in 1946, which was a surprise.

Cowans and Co had a base in Chester road Manchester and a couple of relatives worked there.
-
OK - I hadn't come across Cowans before, but I've now had a look in the 1932 phone books (at Ancestry) and I see they had branches in both Glasgow and Manchester, plus other towns in the same directories. So if they were a national firm their trucks could have been purchased and registered more or less anywhere.
-
Thanks again arthurk, I'll have to have a look at that phonebook.
-
RobinOz - had a go at removing a few of the scratches on the photo and then added a border :-

Eggy,
My cousin would lie another photo tidied up if possible. Are you available? I don't want to impose
-
I can try but they don't all work out :). The software I use for restoration is nearly as old as me ;D ;D and there are many parts of old photos, especially faces, that are very difficult, if not impossible, to restore to a decent standard. But I will try :)
-
Thanks Eggy.
As soon as i get the photo I'll plonk it up here.
-
Eggy,
Here is photograph
Many thanks

NOT even near to the one Eggy will do for you but had a go:
-
RobinOz - I've downloaded your photo - don't hold your breath I'm busy working on a couple for local Facebook groups. My old software might not be able to improve on Japeflakes repair. I'll let you know one way or the other if can do anything with it. ;)

After my quick attempt I am certain you will do another great job :-)

Hello Robin,
Just to clarify how it works on here. If you put a photo up for dating, us restorers don't usually carry out a repair when it hasn't been requested as, a) It is not always wanted or b) the poster can repair their own photos. That is why the rest of us haven't attempted to repair it for you.
Secondly, it is advisable to put up a photo for repair on a different post, as those who have already viewed this post, may not return to it and will miss the chance to repair your second photo.
Carol

Many thanks japeflakes, your work is much appreciated.
Eggy, if and when you have an attempt that too is most welcome.

Cleaned it up a bit and got rid of the tears and blemishes
-
RJ137 - you little beauty!
Thank you
-
RobinOz - had a go at tidying up your second photo and did one leaving the damage on the face and then one enhanced with an attempt to repair the damaged face.
Sorry Carol - I didn't read Robin's initial post properly and my attempted repair on that first photo should not have been done.
-
No need to apologize Eggy, just a curtesy message to Robin that's all.
