Many people will have heard the sad news of the death of RootsChat member Guy Etchells. The genealogy world has a lot to thank him for. It was chiefly due to Guy’s immense perseverance that early access to the 1911 census was gained for everyone. With research experience built up over many decades, Guy was able to offer much pertinent advice on this and other forums. His views, though sometimes controversial, always gave pause for thought. He will be greatly missed. Condolences to the family. RIP Guy.

We sometimes disagreed, but Guy was dedicated and knowledgeable, and generous with the resources he made available. He will be greatly missed, and my sympathy goes to his family.
Guy's many contributions here and elsewhere illustrate his own signature line: "As we have gained from the past, we owe the future a debt, which we pay by sharing today."

Just seen this and it was a sad surprise.
We did not always agree but I could respect his superior knowledge and politeness.
A great loss to Family History research and RootsChat , especially.
Sincere sympathy to his family , with thoughts that he might be meeting those he has so carefully researched ,and brought out of dusty archives.
He deserves a lovely gathering with them.

A word from his family
This is a message from the Etchells family.
It is with a heavy heart we have to announce the passing of Guy Etchells. He passed in the late hours on the 4th October peacefully in his sleep after a short time in hospital. The funeral will be held at Wakefield Crematorium at 10.40am on Wednesday 26th October followed by the Wake at The Magnet Hotel Dewsbury Road, Wakefield from 12 noon onwards. All welcome to celebrate his life with the family and pay their respects.
-
I know Guy started family history at a very young age and I can remember him saying how he occasionally got the odd funny look from archivists when ordering original documents and saying how someone so young could be so interested in genealogy. I also had similar reactions as well when I started out as a teenager and started to travel to record offices, and asked relatives.
He will be very very much missed.
-

Guy Etchells always said not to underestimate the travelling of our ancestors, and agreed how a percentage of our pre Victorian ancestors were more mobile than we think. Seems many of mine were, my Freeman's of Kidlington, Oxfordshire in the mid 1700s had roots 20 miles SW and 10 miles east of it. And an ancestor born 1832 in Co Durham had a Scottish grandfather and a Westmoreland grandfather. Plus several more examples I can give from Norfolk ancestor in London in 1780 and lots of Suffolk roots who moved to Essex c1780-1810.

And in a far wider context I was amazed to learn there were thousands of Scots who emigrated to Poland during the early 16 century! (e.g. : https://www.scottishdiasporatapestry.org/poland/ )
