HI,
First time on this site and lots of informative info.
My father has been trying to find out the identity of his great grandfather forever. His grandfather never had a birth certificate, but raised as a DAVIS. His military records show next of kin as Davis but those who raised him would've been in 50s when they had him. He always said he never knew his real parents. Also in the death notices of his "mother" and "siblings" there's no mention of him. In his "father" there is mention of him.
I have done my dna, as has my father. I was thinking maybe he was raised by his grandparents and one of his siblings was actually a parent but there's no davis matches.I've eliminated all my mums side, and my dads maternal side and have found a few dna matches that have to be connected to dads great grandfather. The closest is 3rd cousin-192cM shared. I've written many times and no reply :( The next connection is 4th cousin 67cM shared. I wrote to him and he replied but we can't figure out the connection. Any ideas how i could figure this mystery out?? my grandfather spend much of his adult life trying to find out his grandparents but no luck, but i'm hoping with modern technology i can find out. Thankyou

Welcome.
Yes it can help but it maybe a bit of a waiting game.
Do read though this thread.

It may give you some pointers.
I have used my DNA to prove with a high probability who my Great Great Grandfather was.
The recent Ancestry Sideview assigns the DNA matches to the correct parental line to support my findings.

Hi, yes i've done my dna and worked out who is connected to the unknown side. The person who would have a direct connection and help answer alot of questions wont reply to my messages. I even messaged on facebook and getting ignored. Hopefully one day another match will come up!

Have you looked at the shared matches that you have with the close match?
-
If this is a direct paternal line then Y-DNA testing could be very useful in identifying a possible paternal surname.

yes, they cant figure out the common ancestor.
