Title: Gindre/Robinson, Lees, Lancashire - 1891/1901 -COMPLETED
Post by: Smilingwillowb on Friday 07 October 22 18:52 BST (UK)
Gus (Augustus?) Gindre was a postman in Lees, near Oldham, who was an army reservist, and he was recalled in late 1899, when the war in South Africa broke out. His brother, James, was in South Africa by at least November, 1899; he was a private in the 2nd Battalion Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) Regiment, and his service number was 4124. Their parents lived at Victoria Street, Lees. My problem is that there doesn't appear to be a record of anyone with the surname Gindre in South Africa with the British Army during the 1899-1902 war.

The service number of 4124 in the 2nd Battalion Royal Highlanders (Black Watch)  was allocated to a J. Robinson. Could anyone have a look for the surname Robinson or Gindre/Ginder living in Victoria Street, Lees, in either the 1891 or 1901 censuses, please?

My information on the Gindre brothers and where the parents lived comes from The Mossley and Saddleworth Reporter, 13.1.1900.

Edit - There was a James William Ginder who served in the Black Watch - that may, or may not, be James Gindre of Lees.

Just to start - here is Augustus Ginder in 1911. Ancestry has him transcribed correctly but Family Search has this:

He us in Lees but not in Victoria Street.

Find My Past has Boer War indexes.
I can see A Ginder 1899- 1902 Anglo Boer War records but have no access.

Thank you, everyone. Looks as though the newspaper simply misspelt the family surname.

Whether James Ginder served as both Ginder and Robinson, I'll have to do more research on that. It wasn't unknown back then to enlist under an assumed name.

Is it James who you think might be Robinson?

Fold3 has records for James William Ginder 18 yrs born about 1872, Stockport.
Enlistment Year: 1890
Regiment:   Royal Artillery
Regimental Number: R. A. 76644

Added - perhaps he transferred to Black Watch as his later record shows previous service with B W.

In that WW1 file, there are records which indicate he can’t be found in BW.
What was his occupation on his marriage?

Added
FindMyPast has a J Robinson 1899-1902 record but no other detail in the index.

No information on James, but Augustus was a grocer.

I’m not sure what you mean there but I meant James’ marriage. He is likely to be a labourer though.

I only see Augustus as a Postman in records.

One of the ABW Forum's experts came up with James's occupations - "When he joined up he was a Moulder. 1911 Has him working as a Dock Labourer, He married Emily Ward in 1903.
Edit....Marriage was in 1902 October, St Winifred's Manchester."

James Ginder deserted from the Royal Artillery on the 6th of April 1890, and enlisted with the Black Watch as J. Robinson just under two months later.

Yes, I saw James in 1911 and his marriage - hence the labourer.
That’s good that the mystery is solved for you. Thanks for the post.  :)

My thanks to heywood and all who have responded and helped sort out the Ginder/Robinson poser.
