Title: Alice Louisa ALEXANDER b. 1906 Cardiff
Post by: ShazAlexander on Tuesday 04 October 22 10:34 BST (UK)
Hi everyone,
I'm currently looking for information about Alice Louisa ALEXANDER, born 6th June 1906, daughter of Lewis ALEXANDER and Alice née AYNSCOMBE.

I've found her in 1921 in Cardiff with her family, but after that she just seems to vanish. I have looked all over the place on FindMyPast, but can't find an Alice or a Louisa Alexander who seems to fit.

She was my great-grandfather's sister (he was Leonard Alexander). He moved from Cardiff to Devon and lost touch with most of his 12(!!) siblings, so I've been having an interesting time tracing them. Alice is the only one I can't find anything about!

Hoping someone knows something!

Possible departure?

4th October 1923 on the Oriania, from Southampton

Alice Alexander, aged 17, scholar. Address 7 Edwards Terrace, Cardiff. Intended port of landing Bahia, intended country of future residence Brazil

Oddly it's a mostly handwritten passenger list with Alice added on the end by typewriter. One other entry added the same way after hers is for a David W Alexander, engineer, 25, but he's heading to Lisbon and his address is in Edinburgh

Hi again.

There is a well documented tree on A**y which has her as Alice L (Known as Dolores)  Alexander who married an Eric Lightfoot; it looks like she married a John F Trebesiner in 1950 as well.  She died in 1995 according to this tree.   I cannot find a marriage to Lightfoot.  Of course you would have to check the sources but its not all taken from a family tree, there are source records there.

On the marriage to Mr Trebesiner she's listed as Lightfoot or Jenkinson, which doesn't quite fit

Alice L Jenkinson married Jack Lightfoot in Rotherham in 1934

Hi As I said it needs checking.  I agree something looks strange about that marriage and the tree owner saw it and grabbed it, some of them also have a Costello marriage but she would have only been 14.   I wonder if the Lightfoot marriage was overseas.

The date of birth on the 1939 census is correct as is the 1911 census.   Her son Martin Alexander Lightfoot who was born in 1942 London the mother's maiden name is Alexander on freebmd.  She would have been "elderly" having him in 1942.

The 1939 census seems to have a name change to Saunders in 1960.

There are loads of rabbit holes to dive into - more to follow when I have time.
Goodnight

As Dolores L Lightfoot she married Kenneth Saunders Jun.qtr.1960 Kensington.

She did in fact have 2 sons - one in 1942 and one in 1944 and they are with her and Kenneth on 1965 Electoral Roll.

I'd ignore the tree references re. marriage to a Jack Lightfoot in 1934, plus the one to Mr. Trebesiner in 1950.

Eric Lightfoot was born 29/1/1899 and didn't die until 1983 so would suggest they were divorced (if they were actually married) as ER's show they are together in Marylebone 1945 and 1946 then there's a jump to 1953 and 1954 when still in Marylebone but no Eric with her.   1956, 1957 and 1958 in Kensington but just her and then in 1960 she married Kenneth Saunders.  ER's for 1964 show them living in Richmond upon Thames with her elder son (having reached 21) plus a Veronica Saunders (a child of Kenneth perhaps) and then in 1965 both her sons listed plus aforementioned Veronica.

Her death in 1995 shows twice - one as Saunders, the other as Alexander.

Thank you so much everyone! I have so many new leads to check out!

Does anyone know why a 17 yr old might have been travelling alone to Brazil?? I haven't connected any other family members to Brazil but the dates do seem to fit. Definitely something I need to look into in more depth.

I'm also going to look into those marriages. Lots of exciting researching ahead of me!

I thought it was her mum, but it's her stepmother.
Sister of mum.
And also the aunt of Alice.

@jonw65, yes he married Alice Aynscombe, then remarried after her death to her sister Louisa. Alice Alexander b 1906 was living with her stepmother in 1921, so I have sent off for the will in the hope it will shed some light!

I see that an Eric Lightfoot married in 1925 in Kensington....perhaps he was separated but still married and that's why he and Alice/Dolores lived together but didn't marry?

Eric's quite well travelled in the early 1950s - New York, Madeira, Durban twice,  Singapore. No sign of Alice/Dolores with him, but on one trip there's a John Alexander aged 82 of High street, Cardiff also on board. Any relation?

As for her trip to Brazil - she's described as a scholar, which most 17 year old female  travellers wouldn't have been, so maybe she was on an educational trip to learn a language
