Title: Tick by surname of marriage cert
Post by: blacksmithy on Saturday 01 October 22 21:10 BST (UK)
I am curious about the obvious tick by the name Bridget Hoolagan who is 'mother of the groom'.
Through various documents her surname seems to be vary (woolahan/coolahan/callaghan) which make her very hard to trace. I assume this is due to pronunciation challenges, the spelling skills of the writer, interpreting the handwriting etc.

I have not been able to trace a death cert for Bridget and wondered if the tick indicates 'deceased'. Or perhaps the tick means her name has been checked as accurate at the time?!
I know John O'Brien and the Trumper parents are still alive at this time.
Any thoughts on the 'tick' would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

No idea what the tick means, The names are just variations of the basic HOULIHAN.  Perhaps he was asked to confirm if that was the correct spelling.

Do you know if Bridget came to the mainland with the rest of the family?  I can only see one baptism in Tasmania and that is for John.

Do you mean Joseph?  When did he die and was Bridget still alive then?

According to son Cornelius' marriage, Joseph and Bridget were both deceased by Jan 1858 and I wouldn't pay any attention to them not being noted as deceased when John married.

If she died before 1856 then you a looking for a burial only.

There are only two possibles that I can see in the indexes:

O'BRIEN, BRIDGET
833/1845 V1845833 140
AGE 40
LA

O'BRIEN BRIDGET
1672/1847 V18471672 116
AGE 40
LA

LA =  Roman Catholic, Sydney, St James'

Joseph?

O'BRIEN, JOSEPH
1013/1852 V18521013 118
AGE 49
LA

It's hard to assume what the 'tick' represents...

Where was the document signed?

It would be worth sending an email to the relevant authority for clarification.

I don’t know the meaning of the tick either.

The writing on the snip provided looks to have been completed by two different people, and not signed by the bride, groom, or witnesses themselves.

Unsure if this is the original cert or a copy of the original. Might be worth chasing up the original if possible to see if tick appears there too as it may just be something added by whoever copied the details of the certificate.

Pronunciation and spelling probably not seen as important at this time.

The tick is curious, but is probably not significant.

Many thanks for everyone's reply about the 'tick'.
Yes, Bridget did come to the mainland and had 2 further boys, both named Joseph.  The first died and the second is my direct line.  The suggested death records for Bridget do not appear to fit the wider information I have.  But as always ...... open to new thoughts.
