My great grandmother dies in Rotherham in September 21st 1919 at the age of 37. The burial records list her parents as Annie and John Maguire and her birthplace as Fleetwood, which would be about 1882. She was married to Thomas Fairhurst in Ince in Wigan in 1904. She later moved to Rotherham. I can't find the marriage of John and Annie in either Fleetwood or fylde. Does anyone have any ideas how to search, as this is a common Irish name? Thank you.

Just for info
https://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/
Thomas Fairhurst married Elizabeth Ann Maguire at St Mary, Ince
-
No name given for your G/Grandmother - 1904 marriage shows her as Elizabeth Anne
Have you looked for a birth reg for her to establish her mmn?
Have you looked for her on the 1891 census to get details of her parents ages & birthplace etc?
1911 census confirms her birthplace as Fleetwood
All census info is free on Family Search

Is she Isabella in 1901 3565/106/27
B 1883 and living in Ince.
Her parents John and Ann were born in Ireland
-
Her birth reg is on freebmd & GRO online shows mmn was Graham
www.freebmd.org.uk

-
Can’t see her in 1891
-
Mother’s maiden name is Graham on GRO.
-
James Maguire b Fylde 1884 - mmn Graham
-
Here are her parents in 1911 - 33 years married
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWYC-9SM
The copy is difficult to read - not sure that these birthplaces shown on Family Search are what is written :-\
-
The 1901 entry showing her as Isabella is correct as James birth & Clara's birth show mmn as Graham.
Why Isabella? Mystery🤔
Suspect parents were married in Ireland
-
Marriage here, I think
1880 Fylde
John McGuire and Ann Mary Graham are on the same page
-
Just beat me to it🤣
www.lancashirebmd.org.uk show it as a civil marriage so cannot be looked up in parish records
-
Does a civil marriage indicate they could have been different religions? Thank you everybody for all your help. The mother is down on records as Annie and not ann, and Elizabeth Ann to Isabella doesn't make sense, unless there is another earlier sibling.
-
Isabel (variations) is a form of Elizabeth.
The marriage says ‘or registrar attended’ which usually indicates in a Catholic Church.
-
Thank you for that, I didn't realise both of those facts, it's very interesting.

Thank you everybody for all your information. I am guessing that it will be hard to trace it further because of the common names and the state of Irish records but I will try. I didn't realise that the census was so informal and took shortened or pet names. It makes the journey all the more interesting, you get as sense of them as a real family.
-
The marriage certificate would give you their fathers’ names and occupations which would help.
You would also find out if the marriage was a civil or church record and if a church one, you might be able to find parish records.
It looks as though Fanny was registered as Margaret Mary McGuire in 1891.
-
Thank you for all your advice. I was wondering what fanny was short for. I have put a post on the relevant Irish forums to see if any family trees link up there but I think you are right, I need their marriage to go d the connections back.
-
There is now more information on the thread below. It began as Annie but is now about John. :)

I was wondering what fanny was short for.
It's usually Frances or perhaps Ann. I wouldn't have connected it with Margaret or Mary.

I agree but Margaret Mary was the only birth I could see. :)

A great-uncle of my mother was baptised with one name and registered with a different first name. Friends of my granddad also changed the name of a son between baptism and birth.
