Hi :)
I am trying to find the whereabouts of the birth record of my Grandfather's Grandfather Thomas Grieve who, according to the 1901 and 1911 Census', was born in Edinburgh circa 1863. I have used countless credits on the ScotlandsPeople site and many hours of searching on other Genealogy sites (mainly FindMyPast, Ancestry, and FamilySearch) trying to locate the record over the past couple of years to no avail.
Also, I cannot find any records for his parents who are both listed on Thomas' Marriage and Death records as John Herbert Grieve and Margaret Grieve (nee Goodall). Due to the information on Thomas' marriage record in 1897 I know that they were both deceased by the time he became married, but am struggling to find any records at all for his parents. I am also not aware if Thomas had any siblings or not due to finding such little information.
If anyone could assist me or give me any advice on where I may be going wrong it would be much appreciated. I will attach a link to the aforementioned records to this post for your viewing as the files are too large to attach to this post.

There are 6 Thomas Grieve's registered in Midlothian on SP 1862- 1866, 2 have middle names, they were born Leith South, as were 2 others, 1 was born St Giles and 1 Inveresk and Musselburgh.
Have you looked at all of these?

On the marriage certificate, Thomas GRIEVE is 34 years old at 1897, and marrying Elizabeth MOONEY, aged 24 years. Thomas GRIEVE b ~ 1863.
There is a 10 years difference in their ages, and it worth considering that Thomas took a few years off his age to be even 34 years old.
Look for him to be older than recorded age suggests.

Can I ask where the 2 different records of residence come from in 1881 (Nairnshire/Peebleshire)?
I'd agree on the above being the incorrect family unless Thomas took a dramatic change of occ. from a Joiner in 1881 to a Miner in 1897 when he married.

I see from the marriage record that Thomas’ father was a surveyor.
There is in this 1851 census a John Grieve age 23 who is working as a surveyor.

He was son of Robert GRIEVE (shoemaker) and Margaret LINDSAY.
I can’t pick him up again in later census records, so that doesn’t help much.
Have you considered that John Grieve and Margaret GOODALL were not married? Thomas may have been registered under his mother’s name.

It's from an Ancestry tree therefore cannot be relied on - you need to view the original document to see what it actually says. (FWIW FindMyPast only says Peebles-shire; no mention of Nairnshire.)
However it appears to say that son Thomas is 23, therefore born in 1847/1848. Also hedging is a very different skill from surveying. So it's probably not actually worth looking it up.
Thomas' age is consistent in the 1901 and 1911 census - 36 and 46 - suggesting a birth in 1864/1865, but on his marriage he says 34, giving a birth date of 1862/1863.

Have you considered this birth index entry...
GOODALL THOMAS ALEXANDE 1862
685/3 243 Canongate (Edinburgh/Midlothian)
1901 census Thomas did state he was born in Midlothian.

According to the IGI Thomas Alexander Goodall, b 3 March 1862 in Edinburgh, was the son of Thomas Goodall and Janet Steedman.
He must have died because they had another Thomas b 14 February 1868.

Thank you all for your help and apologies for my late response. I'm still seeking the elusive birth record of Thomas Grieve. I will continue trying!
