Title: William Asham of Hull mystery
Post by: ryan37 on Friday 16 September 22 08:36 BST (UK)
Posting on behalf of a friend :

I’v been doing research about a William Asham of Hull, who traded and fished in the Faroes til 1875 when he sold his shop and left wife and a kid. He had several smacks and was a known smuggler of brandy to Shetland and Orkney. I wonder where he did end up. As far as I know he
was born in Knottingley, England. 3. August 1828.

Hi folks can anyone help find more on William

Many thanks

Ryan

The Baptism registers for the Chapelry of Knottingley shows that William was Baptised on the 3rd August 1828, his parents were John Farnell and Ann ASKAM. The father's profession is shown as that of a Mariner.

Update

He had a wife from Yorkshire called Mary. And he had a child with a Faroese woman too, but she never left the Faroes.

He owned several ships and probably only was the master of some:

Price Arthur, Hero, The Bee, Sir Colin Campbell, Nisus, La Naide, Striver, St. Louis, L’etoile, Ellen & Ann and Julie or Julio

The newspaper The Hull Packet published on the 12 November 1852 reported on the previous week's cases heard at the Hull Police Court. Amongst the cases was (held on the previous Wednesday):-

'WILLIAM ASKAM master of the Expert, from Riga, was fined £2 for smuggling 1 1/4 pound of tobacco. The captain alleged that it had been deposited in the locker by some of the crew without his knowledge.

William married a Mary Warcup on the 5th July 1854 at Hornsea, Yorkshire. The marriage certificate shows that William's father was called John and he was a Mariner. Mary's father is shown as Isaac, a Miller.

Mary was the daughter of Isaac and Mary Warcup. She was Baptised at Skirlaugh on the 14th September 1834.

The National Probate Calendar shows that Mary Askam died on the 26 August 1912. She is described as a Widow living at 10 Atwick Road, Hornsea. Her estate was valued at £442 - 14 shillings - 7 pence.

A search of children of the marriage has drawn a blank.

In the Faroes it is told that Askham went to Australia and became harbour master in Sidney, but I have not been able to find any trace of him there. Also I find this story to be unlikly because another  Faroese man was in charge of the wharfs in Sidney around the same time. But still Askham may have gone down under.

He did indeed go to Australia - he was certainly living in Wollongong (New South Wales). (snippet image courtesy of Trove, a free web site to search)

If you click on the link below it will take you to Trove, Australian newspapers. If you type in William Askam in the 'phrase box' you should get about 11 hits.

Apologies if this has already been said, but it there is a possible death for William Askam in Wallongong, NSW, in 1912. Father is named as John.
This is an index only, so how much more info is on the full record, I don't know.

A pdf of it can be ordered from:
https://www.nsw.gov.au/family-and-relationships/family-history-search

Just put his name, year of 1912, and father's name John.   I had tried with mother's name of Ann, and it must not be on the record, as it wouldn't bring up the record.

Is it possiable to find out if Mary Askam was statet a widow because Askam was considered dead, or could they have been divorced and she remarried?

Bredo said today :Is it possiable to find out if Mary Askam was statet a widow because Askam was considered dead, or could they have been divorced and she remarried?

William Askam was in Australia in 1886 -- My feeling is that he left his lawful wife Mary to fend for herself. I very much doubt that Mary would have tried to obtain a divorce (not easy for women at that time to divorce their husband). I believe that at some stage, Mary started to call herself a Widow for appearances sake.

I have the same feeling. In 1883 Askam seems to have been onboard a steamship named Glanworth. It was built in Kinghorn for a Australian company. I might have been his way out. As passanger or as part of the crew.
