Help required.
I've been asked by a friend to see if their ancestor (EMILY SPRIGMORE) was on the stage,
either as a singer or an actress.
Not sure how to go about searching for any evidence.
Regards,
Bob
Emily Sprigmore (b1848 Lambeth, d1935 IOW)
Married William Thomas Gibbs 1874, St Mary's, Lambeth.

Something is amiss!
The marriage of Emily Sprigmore, St. Mary's Lambeth in 1874 is to a William Hodge Hurrell, occupation writer.
Her father is shown as William Sprigmore, builder.
???

There is no Emily GIBBS death registered 1935 IOW
There is an Emily Leifchild HURRELL.
Deaths Mar 1935 (>99%)
Hurrell Emily L 86 I. Wight 2b 970
she was single. And born Broadstairs. And she left instructions that her MSS of sacred verse be printed in 1000 volumes and given to the General of the Salvation Army.

My apologise to the above...I misread my own chart as it was folded at the time.
Reading it correctly you are right about the marriage and the death details. Sorry.
Which means as a stage performer, she may have sung/acted under the name SPRIGMORE
or HURRELL.

Hi mckha489,
What does 'MSS' mean?
-
Manuscripts, I think.
I wonder if, instead of stage etc, she sang with the salvation army?

That lady was a spinster.

This looks like Emily who married William Hodge Hurrell. Is this the one we are looking for? I think they must have separated.

Yes, that is the correct marriage, and it is Emily I'm searhing for re acting/singing.
And yes, you could be right with the salvation army.
I did find a database of women who performed at the Adelphi Theatre, and no sprigmore or hurrell on that lisiting. Must remember she could have performed under a different name?
-
Does your friend know when Emily died?
I interpreted previous posts re the Salvation Army as the unmarried Emily L Hurrell.
Is this her in 1911 living with her daughter Winifred?

In 1921 she is possibly a domestic servant or living with a family called Keen in St Pancras.
There is a death in 1933, St Pancras for Emily Hurrell, 79 yrs.
-
Yes, the 1935 IOW death cannot be Emily SPRIGMORE.
I had seen that 1933 death, and thought it a possibility while awaiting the confirmation of just who we were tracing.
In my experience if she had a career in music hall etc then she would be all over the place with different names and this Emily is not.
What is the actual story behind her?
-
The various census over the years do not show an occupation for Emily, on the stage or otherwise, either before or after her marriage. Unfortunately the 1871 (if I'm looking at the correct Emily) which I would think would be the most likely one has a note from the enumerator that is a bit hard to read but I think says that the only person home didn't know the ages of the family and no occupations are shown, except father William (bricklayer).
Can't see anything in newspapers for SPRIGMORE or HURRELL on the stage around this time. :-\
-
Sorry, I think I may be looking at the wrong family in 1871, however I cannot find Emily or her father in 1871. Her mother and siblings Rosina and Alfred are at Union St, Lambeth (Emily's address on her marriage).
-
Ok, thanks for looking.
-
Not Emily, but for interest - her brother Alfred appears to have been injured in a train accident in June 1900 and had his right foot amputated (though he apparently continued working as a builder/decorator). 4 people died and over 60 were injured, it was widely reported in various papers at the time. Happy to provide more info if you are interested.
-
Yes please, I'd be very interested.
p.s.
where do you find such information?
-
Searching newspapers for SPRIGMORE, which is fortunately not a very common name, brings up a few hits for family members. (Though none of Emily that I can see.) There are many reports of the railway accident which mention Alfred, his age, address and occupation, and later the amputation, as well as the others killed and some of the injured. I use British Library Newspapers, however there are also newspaper searches on findmypast and British Newspaper Archive which are both subscription. Will send you a pm. :)
Another item of possible interest - Emily's parents (William and Rebecca nee FLORIO) seemed to be involved in a inheritance dispute in 1861?
