They settled in Broadmeadows where my gggrandfather opened the first Bar/hotel there. He died there 1859.His wife continued to run the bar until it was destroyed by fire 1879.They had 8 children any more information on this family would be great,ie schools etc Thanks Kate

As giblet says, trove is a great source of information. A quick search using "John Bryan" Broadmeadows brings up for example:
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article4791808 1853 - a license refused
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article154821016 1857 - license granted
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article5682888 1859 - death notice
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article5683176 1859 - advertisement re probate (2nd column, near the bottom)
Searching for "Victoria hotel, Broadmeadows" reveals that the hotel was previously licensed to Samuel KITSON (in 1854), so the story that your relative opened the first hotel there is not quite correct. ;)
