I have a DNA match on Ancestry that I don't understand and can't trace. It says this person is my half sister or 1st cousin and using other matches, I have found that it is on my mother's side. This person doesn't have a tree on Ancestry so I can't look on that. My mother didn't have any brothers or sisters so can only assume it is her child. Is it possible that there is a mistake with this DNA match.
-
Your mum doesn’t have any siblings that you or your mother know about. What about your father’s side of the family?
If the match doesn’t have a tree on ancestry, how do you know it’s on your mum’s side, have you compared matches with other maternal relatives?
-
What is your shared cM and do you have any shared matches with her who have trees.

As mentioned, there may have been a sibling unknown to others.
If there was an error with your DNA there wouldn't be a match with your maternal line.
Do you know any of the people she matches with in your tree?
How much research have you done i.e. have you followed direct lines only or have you branched out?
Have you looked for any births with your g/mothers' surname which may show illegitimacy with no maiden name showing?
It may be an idea to send a message to your match & ask if she can tell you the names of her parents &/or g/parents as you're interested in finding how you connect.
Her lack of a tree may suggest she was adopted possibly?

Hi Annie
Thank you for your reply and I apologise for the delay in replying.
Yes, I have a 2nd cousin once removed that I have known all our lives who is also matched with this person so that is how I know this person is on my maternal side. My Mum didn't know her father but I have done his family tree and obviously this person didn't come from his side or else my 2nd cousin wouldn't be a match.
I have done many branches of my tree over the years and I have also looked for a birth with my mothers maiden name but couldn't find anything.
Also this person's name could be her married name which makes things difficult.
Thanks again

Have you considered other relationships?
My niece and I share 1846 cMs.
See - https://dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4

Add - for your shared cMs, it suggests
Grandparent Aunt / Uncle Half Sibling Niece / Nephew Grandchild

Further to my previous post~
Do you have any idea of the matches age? This might help with the generational level.
-
Thank you so much for that. I now know that this match may not be a half sister or 1st cousin which is what Ancestry says. I have no idea who it is though but I will study your attachment. It's so annoying that this person doesn't answer my messages but she is obviously not a member of Ancestry anymore. Her age isn't given or anything about her really although her first name is Haydon which, in this country, I understand is a boys name.
-
That's a pity but I think it might be worth focusing on the shared matches that you have with her/him.
Concentrate on that group and see if there are any clues there. Message the closer ones and work through any trees that they may have.
There are other 'apps' that you can use when you've got more info on them.

Thank you very, very much, you have been a great help and I will follow that advice. Can I ask what these apps are please?

Here are a couple but I think you should do the basic examination of your shared matches first.
https://familytreewebinars.com/webinar/what-are-the-odds-an-online-tool-that-can-help-solve-dna-puzzles/
There is also the Leeds Method but U think you are too close a math to use it

It might be worth reading some of the threads on this board to see what others have done.

If I've found the correct match, given the info on first name only, it doesn't look as if the person has been on Ancestry for quite a while. You could keep sending messages, the erson might eventually reply.
However, I think you might have to work from your shared matches.

PS - do you live in the same city as me?
-
Her full name is Haydon Judd. Sorry I should have said. Thank you for the other information I will have a look at that but as you say, I will get information together first.
I live near Newcastle upon Tyne.
-
have you looked at freebmd there is a birth on there, and FindMyPast try electoral roll 2021
but dont put anything else cos they may be living and we shouldnt use living names

I now know that this match may not be a half sister or 1st cousin which is what Ancestry says.
The relationship given on ancestry is only a guide, probably worked out by all your shared matches' info. & on an average of cMs?
You have a 1, 618 cM match, given as 1st cousin
I have a 578 cM match, given as 1st cousin
Unfortunately our relationships can't be given as 100% precise as the amount of cMs / DNA distributed across / down generations can vary so much.
I have worked out my match is likely to be closer than 1st cousin but like yourself, no reply to my messages although my match has been online recently (in the last month)!

Hi Annie
Thank you very much for that information, very interesting. It is very annoying when they don't answer.

Sandiep. Thank you, I will look on those sites.

Do you have the surname Ryder in your family?
-
Hi decor
Yes I have. Ryder was my mother's name before marriage.
-
I found this chart to be very helpful.
What % of shared DNA do you have with your match?
Annie

Annie
See my earlier reply #7. Your table gives exactly the same information as Painter.way.
https://dnapainter.com/tools/sharedcmv4
We've ascertained the possible relationships there.
Grandparent Aunt / Uncle Half Sibling Niece / Nephew Grandchild
Add - from the shared cMs, I make it approx 22%
Lindsey - was your family in the Lincolnshire area at one time?
-
Following on from decor - I've found a possible in 1947 but not sure :-\
-
I'll send you a private message as we cannot discuss living people

Gadget, I found the image I posted was easier to follow at a glance.
Ancestry shows my highest match as 8% shared DNA.

Annie the match percentage is 23%. The chart is very good thank you.
-
Gavsmum, I sent you a private message. I think I've found the link between you and your match.

Decor. Sorry for the delay in replying I have been looking after grandchildren all day. Also for the personal message. I can't seem to work that out unless its extreme tiredness haha.
The person that you found, I have had him come up many times when I have been looking as that seems to be the only person in the country with that name. I dismissed it because Ancestry has the person down as a female and also he is in the south and my grandmother, mum and I were all born in Leicestershire. The Ryders before that were from Colchester.
Thank you so much for going to so much trouble but, unfortunately, I don't think this is the one.

I was wondering if perhaps the DNA test was from his mother and he'd set up an account on her behalf and that's why female? I think the surname Ryder is also a very big coincidence so I wouldn't recommend dismissing it just yet. Is it conceivable your mother had an illegitimate child in 1945?
-
Yes it's quite possible. She was born in 1924 and didn't meet my dad until after the war, getting married in 1947. She, herself, was brought up by her grandmother so she wouldn't want to put her through that again. I think I am going to have to sit and go through all the quarters.

Yes, DNA tests can sometimes throw up some surprises. Purchasing the 1945 birth certificate might be the only way to know for sure. Especially if the match on Ancestry doesn't respond.
