Title: John F Wilkes
Post by: aidansrest on Monday 08 August 22 16:18 BST (UK)
Hi

Can anybody find this man prior to 1881?
John F (Frederick?) Wilkes was born in Birmingham (according to 1901 and 1911 census), on the 19th July 1855 (according to 1939 register).

He married Ann Cooper in Newcastle on the 19th May 1878 (not sure of the venue, as I only have a brief transcript).
His father is named as Alfred Wilkes.

He appears to have travelled to Newcastle with Ann's family as he can be found living with them in 1881, his place of birth given as Wolverhampton, probably in error as the Cooper family came from there.

He and Ann remained in Newcastle for the rest of their lives and had four surviving children, John George, Jane, Mary Emma and Ethel.

John died (as John F) during the June quarter of 1941, age given as 85 years.
Ann died (as Annie A) during the June quarter of 1942, age given as 84 years.

Can anybody trace him with his parents??

Thanks
Sue

Freebmd has a birth in 1855 but it was March qtr which doesn't fit the 1939 register birthdate

Sorry replying on phone! Hence miss spelt message!
That particular birth registration had a mother's maiden name of Simpson.
However I can't find any evidence of a Wilkes/Simpson marriage either.
A complete mystery!

1861 - Nearest I've got is a 7yr old John Wilkes b Birmingham living in Darlaston Staffs with grandfather Thomas.

There is a married couple in the household Isaac & Fanny Wilkes nee Lane but Fanny is only 21.  Their marriage was 1859

No death for an adult Alfred Wilkes in Warwickshire 1854-1861

It's all very frustrating!
There are a few marriages involving an Alfred Wilkes between 1849 and 1855 but non with a Simpson bride.

I have attached a copy of John Wilke's marriage to Ann Cooper at St Nicholas, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland. I think you will have to contact Northumberland Archives for more detailed information. I think the link you need is here ... https://calmview.northumberland.gov.uk/Record.aspx?src=CalmView.Catalog&id=EP+86%2f31

I was going through my St Chads baptismal records and I found the baptism of John Frederick Wilkes on the 7th January 1855 (he was born on the 2nd January). His father is given as JOHN Wilkes and his mother is Louisa Simpson. Going back and forward through the church records I found two other Wilk/e/s baptisms - Mary (1849) and George (1853). Going back to the GRO records I found the following ...

WILKES, THOMAS*           SIMPSON
GRO Reference: 1847  S Quarter in BIRMINGHAM  Volume 16  Page 222

WILKES, MARY  FRANCES      SIMPSON
GRO Reference: 1849  D Quarter in ASTON UNION  Volume 16  Page 208

WILKES, GEORGE           SIMPSON
GRO Reference: 1853  J Quarter in ASTON  Volume 06D  Page 207

WILKES, JOHN  FREDERICK      SIMPSON
GRO Reference: 1855  M Quarter in ASTON  Volume 06D  Page 264

*Thomas Wilkes is the son of Thomas Wilkes and Eliza Wilkes nee Simpson. The other 3 are brothers and sister.

It could well be that all the above is a co-incidence but it's well worth looking at. There was only one birth on the GRO records for a John Frederick Wilkes in 1855 and it shows his registration as being during the first quarter (Jan - Feb - Mar) therefore it is likely that he put down the wrong birth date on the 1939 Register.
