Title: John CHARLES b 1816
Post by: haney on Monday 08 August 22 01:01 BST (UK)
Hi Everyone
I thought I would try and find out what happened if possible to this relative of mine.  He is the son of JAMES CHARLES (b 1798 Garvock-1879 Woodend Farnell) and HELEN (nee LOW).

From the baptismal/birth record for JOHN it looks like they were living at "Cottages Charity Muir".

1841 Census has the three of them together at Woodend, Farnell.  James Charles 50 years Ag Labourer/Gamekeeper (not born in County) Helen age 50 and JOHN aged 20 BLACKSMITH.

That is the last I see of John.  Don't know if he died just after Census in 1841, Emmigrated??

No marriage found either.  2 Brothers ALEXANDER b 1828, James b? and sister JEAN b 1812.  Hope someone can help.  Kindest regards Dianna

There is an English 1851 entry for a John Charles aged 36 b Scotland - living in  Middlesex with wife Sarah.  Have you already discounted that entry?

I note on Ancestry some thinks that is Charters, they may be wrong of course but the census is not very clear.

I note the 1851 census Farnell, I think James was born a little earlier than your post states.
CHARLES   James   Head   61   Forest Labourer   Kincardineshire   Garvock
CHARLES   Helen   Wife   61      Angus (Forfarshire)   Edzell

No sign of marriages or 1851 census records in Scotland, for their children?

Death Records Farnell 1752 – 1795 then Statutory Registration from 1855.

No Kirk Session records for Farnell.

James Charles more information on Ancestry, someone has kindly attached supporting evidence despite the lack of a baptism record on SP.

There is also a tree for Jean & John but only what is already known.

He does show as Charter in subsequent censuses. Likely birth in Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright in 1815. Middle name of Craik. He had a daughter called Elizabeth Fender McKay Charter. The Kirkbean John's mother was called Elizabeth McKie. So, looks likely he connected to those origins.

I believe Woodend was formerly called Charity Muir.

Hi Everyone and thanks for your input on my G Uncle JOHN CHARLES.  Looks like I'm back to the drawing board as you say the one in Middlesex is CHARTER/S??

So sorry this is so late!  I actually just saw these replies as I was going to make another (unrelated) enquiry.  Anyway thank you all. Kind regards Dianna
