I am researching a number of people who worked for the Duchess of Gloucester and a name that has appeared is Miss Edith Mary Elliott (1891 to 1976). She was a ladys maid to the Duchess in the 1940s and 1950s.
I understand that she was born in Belford and lived part of her early life in Haltwhistle. However, I have no information on that period and this may answer how she came to be working for The Duchess.
Thanks.

If I have the correct Edith's death in 1976 in Northumberland her date of birth is recorded as 20th November 1891. You say you understand she was born in Belford, is this her possible birth
ELLIOTT, EDITH MARY mother's maiden name RIDLEY

She was working for the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester in 1944 as she and the rest of their household travelled to Australia.
Shipping list on Ancestry.

Thanks.
John - thats her and her mother (Ridley)
Jatwit - I have some documentation re the trip to Australia in 1944.
As I said, I can see her service for the Duchess from perhaps as early as the mid 1930s but have nothing about her childhood other than the 1901 Census with her family aged 9.

If you are looking at her ancestry - the 1901/1911/1921 censuses are the places to look.
You can also look for her on the 1939 register

Can only find her in 1901 aged 9 living in Haltwhistle, Northumberland.

In 1939 she can be found but dob is 10 days out.

Thanks John.
What would the second address in Hemel Hempstead refer to?

They are not the actual address but the area of Hertfordshire. You would need to buy credits to view the full entry
-
We all have to pay to view the 1921 census on FindMyPast, you can see as much as we can on a free search :)
-
Does not help, but in 1911 Father John Tiffin and mother Ellen are visitors in different households.

Is Edith part of your FH?

I guess you have tried the Royal Archives?

Hi, Edith Elliott was my great aunt. She lived with her sister (my grandmother) when she retired from service with Alice, Duchess of Gloucester. She was with her before she married the Duke. I have quite a bit of information about her life and travels if anyone is interested.
