Hi everyone. I haven't posted on here since 2019 as things dropped off with the ancestry. But since the 1921 census was opened I have discovered more and I have got back into it with a passion.
I'm struggling so looking for any help please?
*Back Story*
Looking up my great grandfather Clarence Arthur Bamford Price on behalf of my Grandad( his son) as he was adopted in 1908.
Have traced back to find his potential mother BERTHA BAMFORD(born Methley 1884 )- ( died Jackson) we belive she had 3 girls-
DORIS 29-09-02
HILDA 26-12-03
MABEL 11-12-05
WRIGHT(JOHN) BAMFORD DIED before Clarence was born but was named father on the baptism cert.
My g-g-dad was born CLARENCE BAMFORD 1908( on his b.c his mother was named as Lily Bamford/ no father( we belive lily was a fictional name as was illegitimate)
ALL BORN HUDDERSFIELD.
Clarence was adopted by George and Lucy Price( died priestley) in Royston.
Anyway... the 1921 census has shown Bertha living in Wortley-Leeds in 1921 remarried to JACKSON with her 3 girls named as step daughters as well as 3 other children x2 named Jackson, and another MARTHA BAMFORD(1911)
I'm trying to trace anything about MARTHA BAMFORD in the hope she may have the same father as Clarence or it may help me out.
It's all very complicated and I'm really stuck if anyone could help me out I'd be very grateful.
My Grandad is 85 and really wants to learn about his father
Many thanks

Transcription of the 1921 in full will clarify the who/when where.
You can do that, just so long as you do not cut and paste any of it
-
Thanks for your reply. Sorry I don't understand?
I paid for the transcript of the census entry.
I'm just trying to find any more info on MARTHA BAMFORD.

MOTHER IN HER TEENS | Story of an Abandoned Marriage At Aberavon today Mary Martha Bamford, a single woman, of Scythlan-road, Aberavon, summoned John Grace, of Micham-street, Aberavon, to show cause,
An interesting article.

I'm sure the OP has checked freeBMD for the birth of Martha Bamford and found none in the Yorkshire area in or around 1911.
Between 1910 -1912, there were only 5 births of children named Martha in the Wortley reg district:
Births Dec 1910
SMITH Martha Wortley 9c 344
Births Mar 1911
WIDDISON Martha Wortley 9c 379
Births Jun 1911
Hirst Martha A Wortley 9c 361
Births Mar 1912
Dawson Martha Harrison Wortley 9c 783
Births Dec 1912
Crossley Martha Spooncer Wortley 9c 711
Since it's only a small number, I think I'd look at each of these and see if they can be accounted for elsewhere.

It seems likely that Martha married William Myers in the Leeds South district in 1935.
This Martha (?the right one?) is in the 1939 register, with a dob 10 April 1911; William and 2 children are also at the address.
The marriage cert for Martha and William might show a father's name --
There's an ancestry tree which does show Martha as the daughter of Harry Jackson and Bertha Bromwich. You could try contacting the tree owner to see if they have any more info.

Never rely on a transcript. Go to the original image, and see what it actually states.

Martha Bamford could also have been a dancer in Rhyl.

Hi,
Wortley Registration District is not the same as Wortley, the suburb of Leeds.
https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/wortley.html
For example, Martha Widdison b. March 1911 was born in Ecclesfield, Sheffield

As Wright Mayhall Bamford died in 1907, then Martha could not possibly be the Sister of Clarence!!

Wright Bamford was buried in 15th Jan 1907.
Clarence was born 14Oct 1908 so he could not be Wright's son but would be Martha's brother.

Ah, sorry, I know the village of Wortley between Sheffield and Barnsley, which is in the Wortley RD. I hadn't realised there is a Wortley in Leeds as well.

What throws me is why Martha was named Bamford when her fathers name was Jackson.... would she have taken her mother's name as they wernt married when she was born? The other 2 children then had together were surname Jackson.
Thanks

THANKYOU ALL SO MUCH! There is some valuable information you have given me..
My Grandad will be really happy.
I have contacted a few people from ancestry trees who have Bertha in there trees and hope to gain info from them
I don't think we'll ever know Clarences father.... his mother on BC is named as Lily Bamford- mn Bromwich. There is no records of a lily Bromwich so we belive Bertha used a alias.
Although on baptism Bertha and John( wright) named as parents even though Wright had died by this point.
I wonder why he was put up for adoption?
Lots of questions we may never know the answer to.
But so grateful to you all.
Thankyou ❤️

Hi
Martha would have been Bamford ( However mis spelt on gro) as this was her mother's surname at the time as she was not yet married to Jackson yet.
Without proof on Martha's birth cert we cannot even say that Harry Jackson is her father. Martha did state it on her marriage cert but it was 3 years between her birth and mothers marriage.
