Hi all,
Getting back into some family tree tracing after a (very long!) break and have hit a bit of a brick wall. I have a Janet Syme Henderson born in Scotland in 1906, and died in Scotland in 1981. The only other record of Janet I can find indicates that she emigrated to the US in or around 1924 - she appears on a passenger list in 1924 and there's a record for her in the 1930 NY census staying with family in Nassau, NY state. It gets more confusing because at some point she had a daughter (also called Janet Syme Henderson) who married in Scotland in 1955 (so *might* still be alive). However, I can't find any trace at all of Janet Senior having married and / or had a child, or of her having returned to Scotland... and I can't find a birth cert for Janet Junior. I'm not particularly sure about where to look as I've limited knowledge about how US civil records work, or where to find them. If anyone can point me in the direction of where I could look, I'd be really grateful!

Are you sure it was a daughter that married & not Janet b 1906. She died as McCallum in 1981 & that was the 1955 married name

There were three Henderson on that 1924 passenger list on the Cameronia. Arriving 23 December 1924.

Janet Henderson aged 16 years - clerkess -
They all name brother William Pirie. 40 Chapelside Place, Airdrie.
Going to a son James Henderson, 222 Carleton Avenue, Brooklyn.
Cousin Mr and Mrs Bruce - same address.

Could this be Janet - transcribed as Janet Hendson on ancestry but someone has corrected to Henderson

Was Janet's mothers maiden name Peddie?
You say Janet died in 1981 so you must know she died as McCallum - not Henderson??
Suggest you get a copy of the 1955 marriage cert as you appear to be looking for a non-existent daughter

Everyone, thank you so much for all your replies! I am an idiot.... the Janet who married in 1955 is, indeed, Janet herself. I had too many death certs open at once and got Janet's and her mother's mixed up (Janet's spouse John McCallum registered her mother's death). The mystery of her marriage is solved! I'm still conflicted as to whether it was my Janet who emigrated in 1924, (https://www.findmypast.co.uk/transcript?id=USC/1930/004952044/00683/0170) - Janet's aunt Margaret emigrated at around that time (according to some rather vague notes my late grandfather made in the 1940s) but it's equally possible that I've muddled up two people with the same name. I'll do some more digging on that, but honestly thank you all so much for taking the trouble to reply and sort me out!
Added as Carole's reply came in as I was typing - I had indeed been tying myself in knots looking for a daughter who doesn't exist. Thank you all so much for your help!
Also to add, in common with a lot of families the same names crop up time and again as I'm working through the Peddie side of the family - it's an object lesson in double checking the dates and surnames carefully! I feel a right fool, making such a rookie error....
