Title: Ferguson family in Queensland
Post by: isanor on Sunday 24 July 22 15:19 BST (UK)
Hello
I am looking for some help in tracing when the Ferguson Family from Scotland emigrated to Australia, probably to Queensland. It would have been 1861 or later as they are found in the Scottish Census for that year and possible before 1875.
They are James Ferguson b 1820, wife Ann b1828, children William (or Malcolm) b 1854, Mary b. 1856, James b. 1858 and Ann b 1860.
I can see from ancestry Hints that all of them died in Queensland but I can find no trace of them on Passenger lists in ancestry or FindMyPast.
any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thank you.
Regards
Isabel

Have you tried looking at incoming passenger lists in Australian records.  UK passenger lists are not generally available until the 1890's

Hi rosie99.
Many thanks for your answer. I had been looking in departures from the UK. I hadn't known they didn't really start until much later than I was looking at. But I found my family in the FindMy Past - Australia, Inward, Outward and Coastal Passenger Lists, 1828 - 1972. All six of them mother, father and 4 children, age 1 to 7, sailed from London in November 1861 and arrived in Brisbane in April 1862 on sailing ship Clifton. I just cannot begin to imagine what such a journey would have been like. 146 days at sea- the mind boggles!

So thank you for your help. One again RootsChat has proved very helpful.

Isabel
