Edward Arthur, born J quarter, 1839, MMN either Waters or "Bomford", Montgomery.

Have you found a death for Sarah? If not - there won't be a marriage to Mary.
Have you checked the 1891 for Sarah?
He was a railway porter in 1891 & 1901 - where are they in 1881?
Please post Sarah's details - birthyear & birthplace

There's no "correct" marriage entry on West Midlands BMD / FreeBMD
but there is this entry which is worth a look at
West Midlands Marriage indexes for the years: 1890
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Year Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
HINGLEY Mary A ARTHUR Henry 1890 Lye, Christ Church Dudley Register Office 011/001/327

appears to indicate that the records are transcribed for FreeREG - perhaps contact them to see if they can be uploaded?

thanks for the reply
i am going to look at the black country site, never used that one before.
the free bmd and reg , i cannot access as it comes up with an unsafe site for me
-
I use FreeREG all the time and have had no problem;
www.freereg.org.uk
A register office marriage would not be on FreeREG though.
Marriage Reg FreeBMD;
Dec 1890 Stourbridge 6c 317
Henry ARTHUR/Mary Ann HINGLEY on same page

The potential marriage was at Lye, Christ Church, now kept at Dudley Register Office. The parish register site indicates it's already been transcribed.
-
Thats not the impression I got?
ARTHUR Henry HINGLEY Mary A 1890 Lye, Christ Church West Midlands Dudley Register Office 011/001/327 N/A*******
( registers at Dudley Register Office)
+ from other site;
FreeREG - Christ Church Lye, no records transcribed for this church
Or am I not seeing this correctly?
Trish :)
-
well it says Lye, Christ Church there on the line, and indicates that the copy volumes of marriages from which the indexes were compiled are now located at Dudley Register Office, - so there should be at least a Church copy and another one for the General Register Office.
The site blackcountryparishregisters which is maintained by a FreeReg volunteer indicates that the records have been transcribed for the relevant period
CHRIST CHURCH - LYE (CHURCH OF ENGLAND)
Marriages
18 Nov 1839 - 27 Sep 1896 - (PF) (M) 500 entries
4 Oct 1896 - 6 Jun 1911 - (PF) (M) 500 entries
https://blackcountryparishregisters.weebly.com/stourbridge-christ-church.html
FreeREG does have records but not for the relevant time period

the plot thickens
I do not understand why you came up with Henry Arthur when i was looking for Edward arthur
the odd thing is Derry Street seems the common factor, with all of this information.
also edward was left with 3 childen under 9 years old in 1879 when sarah dies, he was a carter originally he must have travelled a lot. then became a porter.
is 1890 for a marriage to Mary Ann Hingley a little late.
#i am coming to think that perhaps they never married , it seems perhaps we will never know

Thanks for clearing that up for me mutchall :)
I think we went with Henry as he is the only one that married Mary A Hingley Rose P

thanking everyone for all of your help

Yes, the census records appear to confirm that Edward Arthur had married a Mary Ann Hingley - I included the entry for Henry Arthur as that was at least at a year before Edward and Mary Ann were found on the census together. Neither you or I appear to be able to find them on the 1881 Census. No index is infallible and neither is the person registering the ceremony. So there is a possibility that Edward was erroneously mistranscribed as Henry

thanks mutchall
i understand where you are coming from
genealogy is a strange beast.
luckily it does not really matter on my family tree as mary ann was not a blood relative it was just me trying to put finishing details to items in my posession . like the photo of Mary ann , edward and my grandma sarah on her 21st birthday. this would have been around 1897 .
sadly i never met her she died in 1939 way before i was born
thanks again for your help]

just been thinking, about this family, you have dated a photo of have of edward, mary ann and sarah (my grandma ) and you seemed to think she was about 14 years old.
this would have been about 1890 . perhaps this photo was taken when edward and mary ann married.
.
it was a studio photo . so i am thinking special occasion. it seems to make sense.
