My Patersons are Robert Paterson and Helen Turnbul who married at St Ninians. Their son married Robert married Cartherine Shaw in 1824 in Denny. Their son Alexander, married Catherine Dawson in 1852 and emigrated to Auistralia the same year and lived near Ballarat Victoria. Catherine Dawson's parents were Elizabeth Ferguson and John Dawson. That is about all I have. Is someone else following this line. I would love to share info and trace this line back further

Dear Peter,
I have not looked at this line for some years but am always interested. Which line are you descended from? Mine is (as in the earlier post) through Robert and Helen's son Robert and their son Alexander who came to Australia. I can give you the info I have on their family in Australia.I have noting further back on this couple. Kind Regards
Keera

Keera: I'd be very interested in these Paterson precursors in Australia. My line descends from Robert and Helen, via James (b 1795), who married Isabella Ewing in 1822, their son, also James ( b June 1828) who married a Mary Paterson (b 1829 in Dunfermline - yes same name) and had, amongst others, Alexander (b 1860 in Edinburgh), who married Annie Young (b Auchterarder c 1861) They had, amongst others, my grandfather, Peter Young Paterson (b 1897) who married Jane Carrigan (of Craigtoun Cottage, Logie, on Airthrey Estate, now the site of the University of Stirling, b 17 December 1899) in 1918 and had, amongst others, my late father Tommy Paterson, in 1922 - who married my mother Margaret McKenzie Morrison of Cambusbarron, in 1948.
All the Patersons spent most of their lives in St Ninians (indeed, the old St Ninians Main street, now demolished, had many addresses occupied by various Patersons, almost certainly related: which I'm still trying to work out!
I can fill in sibling blanks where I have them, but here I've given my direct line. Anu other info you have would be great.
best wishes,
Peter

Here is a photo that might be of interest here.
I was born in St Ninians about the time this photo was taken (circa 1938) and it was given to me by a friend whose parents lived in 'The Auld Toon' (Main St)
The photo was taken in the 'dip' of the 'Auld Toon' looking north.
Shortly after the photo was taken, some demolition began and many of the families were moved to the newly built houses in Bannockburn Rd and Cornhill Cres.
I have had a go at trying to find names to go with faces and have given a copy to the local barber shop in the hope that some of the oldtimers can help in that.

Great photo Fergie - nice to see people looking happy and smiling as a lot of the photos I see, everyone looks so sad or sombre :)

Thanks Monica. Just hope it's of interest to anyone doing research in and around the village of St Ninians.
I could mention that the Pelstream burn, mentioned in accounts of the Battle of Bannockburn, runs left to right under the road and houses about five to ten yards behind the line of children and surfaced just through the pend seen on the right of the photo.
Cheers.
-
What a great photo.
As you say, the Pelstream Burn is so well known in the Bannockburn records, that it comes as a bit of a shock to hear it runs under a perfectly normal 20th C. street and comes out in the pend.
Ridiculous really - it's just a geographical landmark, but linking the 1314 history with this photo makes you realise that the more things change..
the more they stay the same.
Thanks for posting it, as a Paterson descendant with no connection to St Ninians' (as far as I know) I checked the posting out of pure curiosity and am so glad I did - lovely picture

Glad you enjoyed it Maggie.
Cheers.

Fergie: a great photo. I've got a memory, or a false memory, of that street before the houses were demolished. Is that possible? (I was born in 1950) My Dad was born in 1922 at no 118 Main St.
If you have any information on any St Ninians Patersons, that would be gratefully received - even those of more recent vintage. Having come to family history only recently, like many, I regret not quizzing Grans and Grandads now gone. The other day I discovered the existence of a Great Uncle Alex Paterson, who died only in 1974, aged 84 - whom I have no memory of ever speaking to, let alone being aware of his existence. Yet, he must have been at my Grandad's (his younger brother) funeral in 1965 when I was a teenager.
Thanks again,
Peter

Hi Peter, Its been a long time since you posted, but I see you said your father was born at 118 Main street. My gg grandparents lived there according to the 1881 census before they departed for Australia in 1883. They were James Mcfeat and his wife Margaret Muirhead. They had 3 children there Helen (1876), Robert (1878) and Mary (1881) and another 3 in Australia, the first of whom was my g Grandmother Jessie in 1884.

May: interesting and useful information. Can you clarify something for me, though? That 1783 date for the marriage of Thomas and Helen: was that not Thomas's date of birth? And are the other dates, all dates of the marriages?
Many thanks,
PTP

Birth dates. I have marriage dates on my trees.
My ( May) family kept the Paterson name as a middle name for generations.

Dear May28: many thanks. Any additional information (dates (of marriages, births etc/names/ etc much appreciated. Happy also to supply you with any info that I might have and that you might find useful.

Here we go, 7 generations. Dates are all birth(-death) dates. Most info is from scotlandspeople, so birth/baptism dates are often interchangeable unless you bother to decipher the document.

Eileen: I'm very grateful for the trouble you've taken. Your information is very useful. May I request a brief clarification? Your final 5 names, viz Margaret 1872, Janet, 1875-63, Helen, 1881, Andrew McL,1883 and Agnes, 1886 - what were their surnames/who were their parents/ (sorry!)
Also: what does GLW mean?
Sincerely, many thanks: if I can help you in any way, please ask.
PTP
-
You're welcome.
They were all Mays, 6th generation i.e children of Helen Mclean, sibs of ROBERT May b 1842 Culross. (My error, which I've corrected above)
Hence they were sibs of John May 1870
My generation-indenting didn't copy well!

Any Pattersons in Denny Stirlingshire.?
