Title: Timothy Dewis 1786
Post by: Graham Hobbs on Sunday 26 June 22 10:07 BST (UK)
I am trying to trace my maternal ancestry and have managed to get back as far as Timothy Dewis born 1786 , I believe in Foleshill, Bedworth, Warwickshire. He was married to Patience Haywood, but she died in 1827 and thereafter he married Catherine Mallabone on 25.04.1827. We know he was a Silk ribbon weaver Timothy died on 8th May 1853 in Foleshill. He had a son called Edward who married Hannah Hackett.
Try as I might I cannot get any further back from Timothy.
I know that Bedeorth churchyard is full of the graves of Dewis folks and appreciate the waters may be muddy but does anyone have records back from our Tim??

I do not see a marriage to Patience but there is this below.
Timothy signed and it is the same as the signature on his marriage to Catherine.

Timothy Dewis (Transcribed Dewig) to Mary Cade.
Marriage or Bann Date:   11 Dec 1810
Marriage or Bann Place:   Bedworth, Warwickshire

When Timothy married Patience he was a widower, so the CADE marriage looks likely.
His parish is recorded as Bedworth.

Thank you .Mary Cade showed up in other searches so that now makes more sense than Patience. Shame I can't find Timothy mum and dad but we think it might have been Edward.?.
They were hugeunot by descent and I believe the silk ribbon weavers came mostly from Normandy?

Dewis is not such a common name, but it may have been spelled other ways.

I note there is a a James DEWIS born in 1770 Coventry to Thomas and Susannah.

Also consider these marriages, all in Bedworth ….
Edward DEWIS to Susannah HARVEY, 1769
Edward DEWIS to Elizabeth HARRISON, 1766
Edward DEWIS to Sarah HARTOP, 1762

Also
Edward DEWIS, wid to Elizabeth EDWARDS, wid, 1793.

No baptism for Benjamin found, in fact very few Dewis baptisms.

Graham, I have silk ribbon weaver ancestors from Bedworth too. Their children were baptised in the non- conformist church, very often as older children or young adults.
This maybe the same for your family, and could explain why it is difficult to find baptisms for them.

ADDED  Just noticed that Timothy’s daughter, Sarah was baptised in the Independent chapel in 1837, at age 5 ( as explained in my note above.)

Colin if the signature of Timothy on banns for Cade and Mallabone are correct, then I guess we can discount Patience . The registry office has Tim's death cert but alas no birth record  have tried the local history society and the church community facebook group but nothing going back further than Tim. A contact suggested his dad was Edward Dewis, but mostly because he was only person that fitted with dates. Shame.
I know Samuel Dewis my Gt Gt grandad left Bedworth for Oxenhope in Yorkshire where he worked as a weaver at the mill. He was also a congregational minister as was Reginald Samuel Dewis, my Grandpa.

Timothy's signature on all three marriages appears to be the same.

I note the names Dewis has been mistranscribed on occasions, so the best I can come up with happens to be 1777, which according to his death record was his year of birth. It is on Ancestry & Family Search and is about 20 miles from Bedworth.

Tim Davis
Christening 27 November 1777
Worthington, Leicestershire, England, United Kingdom
Parents James Davis, Eliz. Davis

Might be worth a look.

Regarding Tim's father being Edward, as mentioned there were two marriages for him at Bedworth.

Edward Dewis
    15 Nov 1762   Bedworth   Sarah

Edward Dewis, as signed but recorded as Davis.
    15 Nov 1766   Bedworth   Eliz

There were also baptisms for an Edward & Mary & Edward & Susanna

In the period 1762 - 1782 they all had children baptised Bedworth. All on Ancestry.

It appears that his first marriage was to Sarah Hartop on 15.11.1762.
