Post by: asley1 on Thursday 23 June 22 19:22 BST (UK)
Evening, on reading my grandfather death certificate it said
At the time of his death his sister in law was present
Haven't been able to find her to date
Margret Jane Sivier
Little Hungerford
Not sure her surname is spelt correctly

Thank you that is so interesting, I've never known my  great grandmother maiden name.
Or anything about them. Mum didn't ever talk about her family.on one occasion she said she was 10  when her father died . I never meet my grandmother but did see her sisters and one brother
And some family but can't remember them really
Thank you so much.. I shell enjoy my Sunday outing to Yattenton where I believe some of my relatives are buried.

It looks like he was a brickmaker / Joineryman

I don’t think John Scrivener was born in Berkshire.  A tree on Ancestry has him born Stepney Middlesex but they have him as John J so I’m not convinced.

The 1911 has a John J Scrivener b Stepney but he was a merchants clerk living with relatives in Middlsex

There is an 1881 entry for a John Scrivener b Reading 1875 - parents Philip & Mary  But his birth reg shows him as John Edward

It would be an idea to look him up on the 1921 census to determine his birthplace

Thank you so much for the wonderful help
I've found a note saying he was born in Wantage berks
Will look on the census when I return home next week

He was 48 when he died in 1925 so born approx 1877.

He married & lived in Wantage but the only birth reg in Berks is the mentioned above - John Edward b 1874 Reading.  If he was b Wantage - his birth registration would have been in the Wantage reg district

He was 35 when he married - I wonder if he was previously married?

In 1911 Gertrude Smith aged 27 is with parents Richard & Jane - her birthplace is shown as Hampstead Norris Berks

Just found him in 1911

John Scrivener 36 single occ brick maker b London - in lodgings in Hampstead Norris.  So he is not the John J Scrivener b Stepney as shown on that family tree as that John was in London in 1911

You may need to buy a copy of the 1912 marriage cert to find his fathers name.  If the 1921 census gives a more specific birthplace than just London - that may help to find him on earlier censuses

Does the marriage cert show any occupation for his father - even though he was deceased

John’s birthyear varies

1911 - 1875
1912 - 1879
1921 - 1874
1925 - 1877

The only possible match with a London birthplace is the 1881 entry - born 1874 Islington - parents John & Eliza.  John was a slater b Luton Bedfordshire

My reply 21

The John Scrivener b Luton Beds was still alive in 1912 - he only died 1926 & his occupation throughout the censuses is Tiler.  Not the right family!!

I'm glad to hear your grandfather was still alive in 1912 - that's when he married 😂😂  You said his marriage cert showed his father was deceased.

See my replies 21 & 23 -   the point I was making is that the John Scrivener b Luton I thought may be his father was still alive in 1912 so not the right Scrivener family

Sorry miss read
Went to see if I could find their graves yesterday, two church's three graveyards but no luck
There's two more we will have a look in next time that way. It's about 40 ish miles from us
Might try to find the history group in the area maybe they would have a list of graves. Never don't anything like this.
Oh one bit of luck spoke to a lady who was at one church, believes one of my cousins may still be in the area but didn't no their address
