"Girley School was built in 1846 by Richard Rothwell a local landlord. The school served the community well for over 120 years. When it closed in 1968 it became our community centre facilitating all the groups in the area."

There's at least one school photo on the site but there are probably locals there who could give you information about some of the teachers.

Thank you for the articles above. A lot of very interesting items there.
Do you have any info on who the teachers were. I heard there was a Miss T Smith from Kells . There was a Pat Crowley who was from Kerry and before that a Mrs Marmion.
I would like to know who was there before that.
Thanks

To give some sense of time period:
Newspaper snippet 1958 Drogheda Argus
Mrs J ‘Maranon’ , principal, retired after 31 years at Girley.
1964
Mrs Teresa Smith retired after 40 years service
There are a couple of other snippets but much earlier
What years are you interested in?

That's very good..
So it's the years Prior to Mrs Marmion.
So that would 1927 . So any teachers before that time..
Thanks..

Weekly Freeman's Journal, 8 Mar.1924: Presentation to Teacher.—Mr. Palk. McDonnell, National Teacher, Ballinlough, was, on his transfer, presented with a handsome suit case by his past pupils of Girley National School. Miss Quinlivin now Principal at Girley.

I was just going to post re Miss Quinlivan too ;)

Do you have a name for the one you are searching for?
-
Tkx again for all the info..
It looks looks Rita Quinlivan took over as principal from Patrick McDonnell on his retirement. Mrs Marmion probably started teaching there in 1927 and then on the death of Rita in 1937 to over as principal.
It looks like we now need to find who was there before P. Mc Donnell .
I'm not looking for any teacher in particular at the moment..
It would be great if we could work our way back all the way to 1846..
I have to say a great response to my query.
Tkx

Names you could check:
1911 - Moran

1911 - Murphy
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Meath/Girley/Newtown_Girley/720256/
Of course people could move around but those in records we have already seem to stick it out in Girley.

1895 advertisement for a married couple to take charge so perhaps that would be the Morans who were there in 1901 census too.
-
1911 - Murphy
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Meath/Girley/Newtown_Girley/720256/
Married in January 1911.

Edited to Add:
The two townlands are about 10 km apart.
