I have a 1841 census for a John Ennis (father Richard) :
Detail Source
Name: John Ennis
Age: 4
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1837
Gender: Male
Where born: Herefordshire, England
Civil parish: Aston Ingham
Hundred: Greytree
County/Island: Herefordshire
Country: England
Registration district: Newent
Sub-registration district: Newent
Neighbors: View others on page
Piece: 421
Book: 1
Page number: 1
Household Members Age
Richard Ennis 45
Mary Ennis 40
Marian Ennis 15
John Ennis 4
Elizabeth Ennis 1
I am tracing John for a friend. There are numerous trees on line but I believe that most of these trees have the wrong father. If I could find the 1851 census for either John (or the rest of the people on the census) than I think I will be in a better position to secure the correct father Richard. Would welcome any help.
Regards
Ray

Thanks so much all, just love this rootschat. Need to spend some time looking through all this, such a lot to go at, but my initial reaction is that the other trees have taken an easy root to find the correct ancestry.

I looked at one tree and it claimed Richard died in 1841 - no death reg I can see on the GRO site!
::)
-
Ray, have you been working backwards with John, ie death, children, marriage etc. Do you need any info on his later life?
John
-
Osprey, I don't know if Richard died 1841 (after the 1841 census that is) it is something that I want to follow up.
Johnhood, would welcome any assistance but I have John Ennis marrying Elizabeth Brown in 1866 and all the subsequent census information after that. I am tracing son Willie Ennis who eventually ended up in Wales. His son Lewis John then married Alice M Davies who are the grandparents of the person I am doing the tree for (my great niece in fact). It is just the right Richard I am looking for - he is named as Johns father on the marriage to Elizabeth Brown.

He died in 1875 - I mentioned it in reply no. 4. He's on the 1851, 61 & 71 census entries.
Death reg
Mary Inniss 80 june qtr 1869 Newent vol 6a pg 154.
-
What occupation does John's marriage to Elizabeth Brown give for his father Richard.
John
-
Gardener. The image of the parish register is on Ancestry.
-
Osprey, that is one of the problems I have is that the 1875 death date relates to tree's that I have some issue with. It might just be me but these tree's don't have the same 1841 census for John and Richard.

Johnhood, not Johns sister Elizabeth, it is his wife Elizabeth. Though they did not marry until 3 years later. Thanks John

ok, now I'm getting confused.
Other Richard Ennis entries from 1841
in Martley Worcestershire, yes to born in county, no John in household
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ5G-PXR
1851 Abberley Worcestershire b. Orleton
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGCX-FV7
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGCX-FVZ
son John age 8 on second page born Abberley - he was baptised 22 May 1842, son of Richard & Anne
This Richard is in Markfield, Leicestershire for the 1871 census b. Orleton Worcestershire RG10/3242 folio 7 pg 8
death reg Richard Ennis 83 march qtr 1888 Ashby de la Zouch vol 7a pg 78
Haven't found this Richard in 1861 as yet or his son John after 1851.
in Broadway Worcestershire, yes to born in county, no John in household
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ5P-DJD
This Richard died in 1844, burial 17 Nov 1844 age 66 in Broadway parish church
death reg Richard Ennis 66 dec qtr Evesham vol 18 pg 299
in Aston Ingham, yes to born in county, John age 4 in household
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M77Z-VM2
This family still in Aston Ingham in 1851, father Richard has birthplace of Linton, Herefordshire.
https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HEF/Linton
Both Aston Ingham and Linton came under the Newent registration district
https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/newent.html
So it's the Richard born Linton whose death is registered in 1875.
Do any of the trees actually have the death cert which should give occupation?
-
I am just as confused as you Osprey but have now come down decidedly on following John Ennis on the 1841 census at Aston Ingham. This is the only stands up to scrutiny. The other options put forward in the other online trees just appear to have taken the easy option. The only lingering doubt for me is that on John Ennis marriage he gives his fathers work as a gardener and not a Hurdle Maker. I think at this stage that is the John is the most realistic.

1871 census has the Richard Innes 83 b. Linton gardener. It could be that hurdle making isn't a year round occupation and he worked as a gardener at other times.
This says in winter & spring
https://victorianweb.org/history/work/13.html
I'd agree with you on trees taking the easy option!
;D

Thanks Osprey, wirth that information I am now more than satisfied that I have the correct links for John Ennis to Richard. Could you provide the link to the 1871 census for Richard because I don't have that one.

Thanks Neale. Sorry Osprey missed your info on the 1871 census on your reply.
Have also confirmed a death for wife Mary in 1869 at Newent (June Qtr 6a 154), and was also able to confirm the earlier info Osprey provided on Richard's death in 1875.
