Title: corner shop
Post by: Pemus on Wednesday 01 June 22 08:36 BST (UK)
I'm trying to confirm that there was a corner shop run by my Great Grandparents-Thomas and Mar.y Pemberton. The location was Alice Street ( no longer a street of that name) in Crewe. A census search has not produced an answer. The shop if certain was there in 1920s, as Mary died in 1929.Richard Moon Street might have been the adjoining street to Alice Street.

Was Alice described as a shopkeeper on the death certificate or the wife of a shopkeeper?
Do you have them in the 1921 census?

Doesn't help with the shop, however Alice Street appears on this 1908 map (top near the middle), off Richard Moon St. It appears to become West Ave on the other side of Samuel St.

Maybe a coincidence, there is a mention of a Mr PEMBERTON of Crewe at a conference of sole proprietors of business in Derby in 1917. He is representing the Crewe Tradesmen's Association. He is quoted as saying that the "Crewe Tribunal had treated the shopkeepers very favourably."

That is possibly Joseph Pemberton who was a grocer shopkeeper in the 1911 census.

At the Crewe Bankruptcy Court, Thomas Pemberton of Richard Moon Street, Crewe attended for his adjourned examination.

Oops, sorry. Perhaps accounts for why I didn’t find her in 1921 ::)

Thanks for the map and newspaper references regarding Alice St corner shop. I'm still checking them out.  The map is proving tricky to study but will progress as these are useful references-thanks again.

Still no success with 1921 census mentions of Thomas and Mary Pemberton but will continue to search as Thomas and Mary were definitely in Crewe and in the areas pf the town that they were long associated with.

Perhaps I am looking at the wrong people then  :-\

This is what I see for what I think is your family.
1901 3356 /180/35
5 Alice Street
Thomas is  Labourer in Engine and Boiler Shop
Mary has no occupation

1911 they are at 79 Samuel Street Crewe

From hanes teulu’s post they ventured into shopkeeping between 1901 and 1911.

There is a shopkeeper (wife running the shop at number 31 Alice Street) no connection

In 1921 - Monks Coppenhall parish I see
Thomas Pemberton
Mary Brown Pemberton
Elsie Billingham
Henry Edward Billington
Sidney Philip Billington
Is this your family?
