Title: Stage news - how to access
Post by: Chris 71 on Saturday 21 May 22 19:03 BST (UK)
Hi can anyone tell me how to find out about a relative that was on the stage and was said to play in every theatre in Britain? His name was Walter George Dunlo Allen and he was part of the Kracy Komics & Crazy Gang which included Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel. He was born in London (Notting Hill) in 1878 and spent his life in theatres as a producer/actor/director and also wrote pantomimes. He had a son born 1913 Walter Thomas Dunlo Allen who appeared with Todd Slaughter in the play Sweeney Todd. Walter senior married my aunt Frederika Evans in 1946 after his first wife died. Freda was only 21, he was 68. I dont know how to access anything about the theatres. I know Walter senior played the lead role in Harlequin at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane London in the 30's and 40's. can anyone point me in the right direction?

There is a newspaper called 'The Stage' available on the British Newspaper Archive. It has issues from about 1880 to the 2000s. I imagine it might be worth your time looking through them.

EDIT: I've had a brief look myself and there are a few bits about a Walter Allen.

Hi, thanks. That isn't the Walter Allen though. My Walter used his full name. Probably cos he thought it would stand out.

Sandra thankyou so much. Its a start. I never realised he had just used the name Walter Dunlo. I see one of his sons Harold Dunlo is also mentioned. I really appreciate this.

Thanks Sandra. I decided to go to the library tomorrow to look him up there as they have access to the newspaper archive and I can print anything out that I want. You have been a fantastic help. Thankyou.
