I've had a quick look through and I can't see any mention of this subject. Apologies if I've missed something.
A few days ago Ancestry, without any warning, totally changed my Home Page on the Ancestry.co.uk website.
It now contains a load of 'information' which is nothing to do with my family and is of no interest to me.
There is no room, and no way I can find, for me to change it to suit me.
I have just spent 45 minutes looking for a way to complain to Ancestry about this. I finally found a way to communicate with the by email and I've sent a message to them. So far I've received an acknwledgment of receipt saying someone will be in touch.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so, please let me know how you solved it.

It's very cluttered. Like you I can't seem to find a way to personalise, as there was in the olden days!
I quickly click on Trees, Search or DNA from the top bar so that I can get out of it as quickly as possible.
Gadget
-
Thanks Gadget.
I'm glad it's not just me
-
I wonder if it's a slow roll out and that is why no one else has mentioned it? I don't seem to have any changes on mine yet.
-
It is very cluttered, littered with snapshots of everything!
I guess it's supposed to be like an index page to get to hints or the part of the tree you were working on or your DNA matches quickly and visually. It would be much better as a drop down so that you could choose to use it or not!
-
I have just opened up the 'advanced search' page and bookmarked that so that I skip all the rubbish when I initially open the website.
Debra :)
-
I've now done something similar. To get rid of that awful page that my usual bookmark opened, I've created a bookmark folder for 'Ancestry' and in that i've added links to DNA; Trees; Search. I tend not to use the Search very often!
:)
-
I don't like it either. They are leaving any "Quick Links" you have already set up but you won't be able to add any more soon.
I now have to click on "Show More" to open all the quick links I have set up which is a nuisance but works.
Without inputting any data - If you click on "Search" on the right hand side you get a better search facility
-

I don't seem to have any changes on mine yet.
Nothing new for me (yet), mine is still fine so far! ;D
I really can't be bothered with all the arty farty extras which we neither want or need.
It's getting to the point, I struggle to navigate any sites I've used for over 2 decades as all the updates are confusing, time consuming & basically useless for what I want/need ::)
Annie
-
Really cross about the Quick Links, as I used those all the time!
I've now bookmarked the Advanced Search page, and put all bookmarks for the collections I had in Quick Links into a folder. That folder is now on my Bookmarks Toolbar, which gives me a drop-down list. I'm not going near their useless front page now!
-
There have been complaints about it on their facebook page, if enough people complain they may listen, but I doubt it. :-(
I do wish they would fix the messaging and other things instead of the things they do do!
-
The new home page took me by surprise as well this week. It has nothing of any use to me on it, except the link to the card catalogue which is in roughly the same place as it was before.
These kinds of changes are made by people who think it all looks very nice on their smartphones. They have no idea about the needs of those of us who try to do serious research.
I think I'll walk away from ancestry when my subscription expires.

I remember when they made changes to ?DNA displays, etc. a few years ago, they consulted us via an online questionnaire. They seem to have given up this technique and resorted to a 'take it or leave it' approach.
Not good.
-
They actually now have a panel that you can sign up to to give opinions on things - supposedly you get rewards for doing this. I signed up for a year, got nothing in rewards and didn't feel they were taking any notice of what I said, so I gave up!

Gadget
I've had the new page for nearly 2 weeks, and I do exactly the same as this Gadget. There's nothing on the new page that I want or need.
-
The new homepage has just appeared for me tonight (I had the old one when I logged on this morning), so it does seem like it's been slowly rolled out across different accounts - given that some of you have had it for weeks.
I never really used the homepage before, I always just went straight into my tree.
My first impression is that it looks a little bit cleaner.
However I do feel like the emphasis of it, is based on looking at what other people have got on their trees. What worries me about that, is that I think it's going to encourage a lot of mistaken assumptions and perpetuate bad data in general. Not everyone's tree is correct. Only the other day, I came across a mistake that someone else had made, totally wrong marriage for a couple. It's in multiple trees I think.
I know that it's the individual account holders responsibility to get their own information accurate, but it's easy to be swayed, especially when you are new to doing this.
-
I don't like it.
There's a family tree. Ooh look, it's mine, I put it there and I know how to get to it already.
Hints from the 1950 US census. I don't have a world subscription, and although I'm sure Ancestry would like me to, that isn't going to work.
Hints for the wife of a second cousin 2x removed - yes looks like it's her, but not particularly important, and if I actually wanted to follow up her family I'd do that without needing hints.
Hints containing information already included in my tree.
Some random photos from other people's trees. If I wanted to stick a nice picture of Ely cathedral on the profile of anyone who might have married there, I'd choose my own. Only I don't.
My latest DNA matches. Yes, I know where to find them, and yes, I have noticed that there's a new ethnic inheritance thingy. I've already looked at it, thanks.
Meanwhile, why is the custom link feature being discontinued?
-
I had the new look a week or more ago, certainly changed but as like Stanwicx I normally go straight to trees, resume a previous session or have left a pinned tab on my web browser of where I left off before going to bed not too bothered. Yes I had customised slightly but have my common Ancestry records eg UK BMD, 1939 reg saved to toolbar of browser.
Certainly wouldn't want the US 1950 census on it, in fact happily just have the top blue bar and the right hand side pane. However the US 1950 census is free to access for all whether you have a world subscription or not as is the 1940 US (though seem to have to logon to .com before that is)
Pretty sure there have been discussions about the new page, US got it first, think Christa Cowan of Ancestry has done presentations on her whats new videos but I tend to skip through and only watch if someone has linked and mentioned on Facebook. If I recall she said most people did as PrawnCocktail has done so didn't use the homepage customisation.

If the way to get around the Home page is to link to other areas, then why have it? I now link to DNA and Trees. I mainly use the search for US, Canada , etc. UK records are much better on other sites.
-
Mine changed tonight.
Well, that is waste of screen space!
-
If the way to get around the Home page is to link to other areas, then why have it?
When you think about it there is little on the home page or Dashboard of Findmypast and no one seems to comment on it, every time Ancestry change something there is a tide of complaints but it soon ebbs (not suggesting they are necessary or worthwhile) They seem to want to make it look more touch and swipe than click and type which I'm not bothered about as always use a computer.
-
Jon
Your argument seems illogical. It's not too good on a smart phone either!
-
Quite simply, I hate it. As people have said, full of lots of stuff not relevant to my research at all. Hopefully, Ancestry will read this post and amend their mistake asap!
-
Typical Ancestry - first two “Hints from the 1950 US Federal Census” said that, unfortunately, the page was no longer available! I didn’t bother looking further.
When will these numpties spend time sorting out what doesn’t work rather than inventing more excrement to go wrong?
-
I’ve got a “please explain” from their hints on my home page. They have Emery Young as paternal grandfather of wife of first cousin. Huh? He is my biological great grandfather? How does that work out? I see that as a new high in their hints confusion.
-
Once upon a time, I worked in computing where I designed large social/health databases for research purposes. In those days we tested programs thoroughly and very few bugs appeared in the live systems. In Ancestry, and a lesser extent, FindMyPast, errors are a common occurrence. Have professional standards fallen so low in computing these days and are these changes thoroughly tested before going live?
I've just dared to look at my Ancestry home page again. Here I find a strip of info about my main tree - this is the one that I selected as the preferred option for the page. I also have guest or editor rights on a few other members' trees/DNA.
Then, for some reason, my Ancestry home page shows some irrelevant 1951 US census pages. These are followed by some details - photos and other records - relating to trees that I've not looked at for a good while. They are not relevant to my tree. Then they summarise my DNA ethnicity results ::)
It really is ridiculous.
Add - also some US School Year Books that don't seem to relate to anyone's trees
-
Gadget son works in computing and he is fast losing hair as the ‘bigwigs’ demand that programs or changes go live on a certain date. No questions asked! Even when they have been told that there are known bugs to be fixed. Often they soon go offline again whilst bugs are fixed. ‘Bigwigs’ have no idea of the complexities of programming.
-
I have just noticed this change on Ancestry and it is a mistake . It does not look like a Home page , too confusing . I am having to go into all sorts of info to access my f tree , which used to take 5 minutes and now ages . Bring back the original one it worked well .
-

I feel like there is an increasing America bias in how the website is built, which is becoming frustrating to me. I've got nothing against America, but it's frustrating when you know your relative lived and died in England.
I find that when I am searching for something, I keep having to adjust the settings to exclude American results. Like the drop down box which allows me to focus on England, that automatically resets to All Collections every time I edit something else in the search terms.
American results seem to pop up more and more prominently, no matter what I am searching for.
-
Yesterday I answered a request from ancestry dot com for confirmation of a match by a new "cousin"; but was automatically reminded that I belonged to dot uk.
I probably won't bother going back to ancestry dot uk, as I couldn't access any page showing any of my trees.
-

Stanwix I would agree with that I continually have to adjust location when searching from a person's Facts page. Eg I'm on the UK domain I do a search opening in new tab & the collection Focus says 'All Collections' so I change that to Ireland. Then I go back to my Facts tab and do exactly the same this time it says Focus = Ireland but the Blue Apply bar is active and all the results are from the US census (this chap did emigrate but as currently don't have world sub I just want the Irish data, not that there is much). I click on Apply and the page refreshes dropping the US census and directories and producing Irish and UK info including the birth index entry I had missing, some trees and suggested military info. The Apply option is now greyed out. But I have to click apply every time.
Crista Cowan says on Facebook in response to similar complaint The collection focus is a sticky setting but you set it from the “search all collections” page. So, go there. Fill in some things to search for. Set the collection focus and click search. Now, go about your business searching and it will stay like you set it until you change it.
Just experimented even with that main Search page showing Ireland or UK until I actually enter John Smith and click & perform a search there then I have to keep blue applying to people. Having done the John Smith search and right clicked to open wife, father or child the Collection focus remains at Ireland and the apply button is greyed out and remains so when edit a locality or date. Not perfect perhaps, just had to reset again going back to other tabs.
This seems a poor design, strikes me if on .co.uk should by default focus on UK & Ireland, Canada for .ca, Australia for .au etc then modify as desired when researching abroad from your home domain with world sub.
A better 'home' page may be just to use that https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/ as drops all the dross.
-
As I said, I hate it. and I have to agree about the American content. Now, I do have one or two people in my tree who were in the USA - however, there is not much use in giving me hints about any of them as, if I do try and access them, I can't because I do not have worldwide subs. Please, bring back the old page - it took me a while even to find my Shoebox yesterday, squirrelled away in a list on the RHside of the page. Bah humbug! (or worse... ???)
-
I don't have a tree on Ancestry, and have no desire to upload a tree, so the new design is meaningless to me. All I need is the bit in the sidebar - ideally just the list of links I use regularly.
I find it quite amusing how they are patronising me.
-
Hi
I have tried to sort it out no luck.
Think of cancelling subscription and going to find my past.
John
-
I don’t have a tree on Ancestry. I’m wondering if this has more to do with ensnaring new users into starting a tree. My home page seems to be geared up for such. It certainly doesn’t look like a ‘home page’ anymore. Learn about your family is the first line at the top, a large blue button, start tree.
Boxes to input your parents and hit go…you’re then taken to a page to add other family members.
To the right I have a person search facility and scrolling down I find the list of record collections. From my point of view it just looks odd but no more difficult to use.
-
Rather than start a new thread...
Can anyone please tell me how / where I can find messages quickly without having to go to my DNA matches to find who I sent messages to in order to see if I have any replies?
I'm almost certain, at one time there was an envelope at the top right side which highlighted the number of messages which now seems to have disappeared or was I dreaming ???
I really don't know how or where to see if I have messages at a glance?
Edit to add a pic of what's on my dashboard to help see where messages can be found?

Thank you Nanna! 8)
It's changed a tad I think & I did have a new message tonight, 1st in a while.
I hope my new big DNA match reads their messages from me very soon!
Messages sent days ago, still unread although they've been online a few times since they were delivered ??? ::) & I was wondering if they could actually see where messages were at a glance as I never use the home page normally, I open straight to Family Trees.
Annie
-
Think the messaging system is on the blink, again. Yesterday I actually had a reply but no email to tell me about it. >:(
-
I actually like the new home page. I have connected with 2 new cousins because of it and the fact that images of people within my tree appeared. One of those confirmed a branch I had tentatively attached information to but hadnt been able to prove.
-
I haven’t connected with anyone that way. It seems that I have to do the pushing. I did connect with someone when I put a picture on the photo board on Rootschat with a possible name of the person. It turned up in google and they confirmed it was her. They were excited as it was a photo they had never seen.
-
I have just opened up the 'advanced search' page and bookmarked that so that I skip all the rubbish when I initially open the website.
Debra :)
Used Ancestry this morning for an hour or so, 'old front page' = me a happy chappy ;D
Left PC logged on to Ancestry to go for a mid morning coffee - came back to PC after about 20 minutes to find that I have been upgraded (??) to the new style front page complete with a load of useless hints (my surname isn't as common as Smith, Brown, Black etc but I was presented with a heck of a lot of hints even from countries that I know I have no link to) :(
By-passed the uninviting front page by book marking to the search page that we all know and love = me back to being a happy chappy ;D ;D
-
Annie, the speech bubble on the right with the green dot next it is what you are after.
Can anyone confirm there was originally an envelope for messages (which you'd expect)?
I'm a bit phobic when I see different things, I don't like clicking on unknown tabs ;D
I don't like (regardless which site) when there are tabs you have to click on to find out what they are.
I preferred when you could hover over signs which told you exactly what they were ::)
I just don't like the 'unknown' ;D
Annie
-
I've just noticed that the 'to-do' list which I had on my home page has disappeared. I've been on live chat to Ancestry who confirm that the to-do list feature was removed with the recent update (without any warning so that I could have made a note of the things I still wanted to to).
Apparently Ancestry is 'very sorry for any disappointment caused by this new update'. >:(
-
That's really bad.

Yes, there used to be an envelope for messages, it used to show how many messages were new.
What Nanna52 described as a Speech bubble is actually a leaf which shows green when you have new hints.
-
Might be a bit old fashioned in web design terms but maybe a popup box informing users of a new message would be a good idea?
It's hard to tell how much of the non response issues stem from design/notification inconsistency or just the general lack of interest a lot of new members seem to have about engaging. Bit of both, I suppose?
-
My home page consisted mostly of links to various databases - 1901 England Census, BMDs etc.
Note that these are the INDIVIDUAL databases. I know where and when I want to search. None of what they suggest - "Show me all the records for anyone in the world called 'John Smith'. Now spend 20 minutes applying filters to narrow down to John Smiths in the right area and time period."
For a while the "old" page was visible in the Edge browser, while the disaster appeared in Chrome.
However they went and killed off the good one DURING my usual session volunteering at our FH centre.
Most embarrassing.
-
I hate the new format for the Home Page as well. I finally heard from Ancestry who said there was no way to delete the contents of the Home Page. They are setting your home page up to help you navigate and making it very personal....especially for you! What a lot of rubbish. It just clutters my home page with garbage I do not care about. Very frustrating and no way to delete the contents.
-
Yes, there used to be an envelope for messages, it used to show how many messages were new.

The "speech bubble " is just to the right of the leaf (but too easy to miss IMHO)

There was a section for recently used searches and topics, I can't find one now it's a nuisance. Also because I use an adblocker I have to consent to cookies every time I change page.
rayard.

Simply click on Search, Rayard, and underneath the search boxes it has " Your recent searches". Re recent topics look at the top right of the page where it says " Jump back in" and click on " View all".

I use Ancestry.ca and am definitely not a fan of the 'new home page' either. There was a brief option to view a new Beta version of the home page and then a couple of days later it's a done deal.

RANT ALERT.
When Ancestry change the layout I rapidly became incensed!
USA centric, for goodness sake there is more to this planet the the US of A.
Out of a 6000 person Family Tree there are no more than 30 USA born “Cousins” who have found their way only my tree via the DNA Matches yet all the hints shown are for people born in the USA.
I regularly get hints for a USA born woman who has the same birth name as my Sister In Law, despite me selecting IGNORE against the hints on her profile page. The coders at Ancestry are obviously second tier when it comes to their database modelling for they cannot get it right nor can they enable decent filtering of results.
I did start a Chat Session to complain but the actual person I was chatting with was as thick as a piece of 4” x 2” timber, for they could not understand that I do not want USA based hints that are in error on my homepage.
Nor could they understand that we logged into their .co.uk website and hence we want priority in searches to UK based results unless we specifically want to search another Country.
In the end I gave up, there is nothing worst than hitting your head against a wall and not getting any acknowledgement that I might be right.
When did giving the customer what they want go out of fashion?
OK Rant Over.
-
Thanks Millmoor but my "jump back in " is missing!!
rayard.
-
Are you looking for the " Jump back in " on the search page, Rayard? On the search page I am looking at presently it is at the top of the right hand column, immediately above the section called " Explore by collection".
William

Biggles50: I totally agree - why is all this US stuff coming up anyway? And why am I given, every single day, the information that long-gone ancestors are 'celebrating' their birthday, wedding anniversary, death today? (this irks me the most I think). I already have that information and although I am interested to have found the links within my family, these actual 'milestones' are not of the least importance...the home page is now full of nonsense. It took me an age to find my Shoebox which seems to be nestled in with message boards and collections. And, as I said before, do you think they are reading this post and will take this mess away?
-
Hi Millmoor, thanks for helping but now that the homepage has changed it's totally different and it's a grey panel with nione of those old features on it.
rayard.
-
Correction! Sorry Millmoor I've found it now! It's on the search page now not homepage.
rayard.
-
I'm relieved that I don't keep my tree on Ancestry. I don't get any of these unwanted hints.
They do sometimes try and help me with a search I've recently done, bless them. It's almost always something done for someone else and I'd long moved on. :)
-
I had an email from them to say my tree was growing and I'd added eight people this week. I don't keep a tree on Ancestry!
rayard.

I do get that occasionally, because I'm an invited guest on one other tree. Fortunately I don't get their hints ;D

It’s probably because all you have to do is put a name into their website and a whole (flawless) family tree will be laid out in front of you!
-

rayard.
That happens when someone has shared their tree with you at some stage over the years. When they add new people, you are informed by Ancestry using that wording. I was mystified the first time it happened to me, until I figured it out.
-
I would love to get rid of the squashed womans face that greets me every time I log in.
Have asked how to do this but no response yet.
-
Having worked with this terrible front page for a while, I am totally frustrated. Why would I:
1. Want to know the birthdays of people born 225 years ago?
2. Want all this American rubbish when I have the standard subscription only?
3. Need the anniversary dates of those people born 4 generations ago? (As with No. 1 above, am I about to put on my glad rags and go out and celebrate my great-great-grandmother's brothers' mother-in-law's birthday/anniversary/wedding?)
4. Need reminding about the research I was doing just yesterday? (I know I'm getting up there, but my short-term memory is not quite that bad - yet!)
...and why would those running the site think this was all a good idea?
All this information just clogs up the page. Bring it back so I can actually find what I'm looking for (Shoebox, list of new records available, etc.)!! I have too much 'invested' in this site to want to remove everything to another.
Is anyone else as incensed as I am...a feeling which intensifies week by week, I have to say >:(
-
I now ignore it and either click on to what I want or go to an appropriate bookmark.
I've just had another look and find it really very messy and over cluttered, especially when you have access to multiple trees and DNA kits.
It's best to rush through quickly ;D
-
Rather than begin a new thread...
Ancestry have now been tinkering with the list of DNA matches.
Instead of names showing (in full) i.e. forename & surname in the usual horizontal manner they are now showing vertically with only part of the forename!!! ::)
In order to view the names, you need to press CTRL & - (minus) which reduces the page size but enables you to view names in full.
How do we apply for a position at ancestry as it would be a great post being paid to make a mess of things which I have a degree in (self taught) on any keyboard! ;D

Gadget, I've been using the same laptop for a couple of years & this only happened yesterday.
However, a few months ago after an update, my screen view is only approx. 75% of what it should be.
I'll post a query on the techy board at some point to see if it can be rectified.

I had a problems with my desktop PC after yesterday's update - it took me ages to sort it - so it could be the update.

I know this makes me a total cheeseball, but I kind of like the birthday/anniversary feature. In a way, it's a shame I'm teetotal or I'd have an excuse to raise a glass everyday of the year! ;D

You’re not alone! It’s also happening on my iPad. It appears as normal if I view the screen in portrait view, but like many others I usually use landscape.
Not very pleased!
-
Bearing in mind that I am a cynic, I believe that all that American ‘rubbish’ you are continually referred to is so that you will pay a fortune to upgrade to see the hints. Probably to find out they are nothing to do with your tree anyway.
What annoys me is the story of ‘paternal grandfather of wife of first cousin’. Umm, he is my biological great grandfather.
-
Is there any hope that the people at Ancestry are reading this and think to themselves that this might not have been such a good idea?

Not a chance, they just want your money, money, money.
-
Finally I've been helped by Ancestry's new home page.
I accidentally clicked on it earlier today and was offered a few 'matches from the 1950 US census. I thought that I recognized a couple of them and, lo, they were very very distant relatives of mine or spouses of distant relatives ( say 5 or 6th cousin with removes!).
I'd decided not to look at the 1950 at the moment.
:D
-
Not sure if this is a glitch or not but the top bar is now black for me and notifications are in red. Maybe makes messages stand out more?

Mine are back to normal almost...there's only room for 8 characters on a name i.e. a name like Robertson runs into a new line but it's better than it was as I can at least read them now ;D
However, I have noticed my 'green' leaf (for hints) is now red ???
To think people are being paid for all this nonsense too! They'd be better leaving alone what doesn't need fixed & reducing their subs ::)

I got those last night. I assume that they want us to notice them as green must have failed. There's no way of turning them off :(

Is there any hope that the people at Ancestry are reading this and think to themselves that this might not have been such a good idea?
No. Ancestry probably have one or two computer nerds trying to think up new ways to link any set of data to every other set. Nerds have been at work in new-car design for quite a few years :(

I have only just noticed the fact that the dot next to the green leaf on the toolbar has turned red. However when clicking on it none of the hints themselves have a red dot - they continue to have a green dot. Is it to signify a new hint do you think - rather like it used to vibrate on first view but perhaps now is just red.

Not sure if this is a glitch or not but the top bar is now black for me and notifications are in red. Maybe makes messages stand out more?
Last night I had the red notification too...then it became the more usual green, then back to red, then green!!!
-
I've just managed to turn the red off by looking at some trees that are not active! The 'travel bureau' Extra remains red.

Yes I think if I look at the hints the red will disappear. Don't get the hints for members' trees so it can't be that for me.

Yesterday and today, I've had 'red / green / red / green' and now back to red -- just waiting for AMBER so that I can proceed with caution!

Gadget,
I'm sure you've been a member of ancestry far longer than I which has been since 2005, it's only taken them at least 17 yrs to discover it's failed & leaves are no longer green (climate change) or is it autumn in the USA? ;D
They'd be better employed to fix the 'message' problem as messages I've read often still show as unread.
I've said this before, I had far less computing skills 17 yrs ago & was able to navigate all our usual FH sites easily, nowadays it seems I need to learn basic computing skills for their sites or need a degree in computing ???

I hadn't known this thread about Ancestry's new layout existed until just now.
The new home page has been driving me nuts - also other alterations. Lots of my main photos against people had disappeared into 'media' and were ostensibly hidden from view.
However, I haven't had the hints issue which has just been described - mine have remained a constant green (unless of course I have now put the 'mockers' on that by saying so.)

Pheno,
I've just had a look at my leaf & there's been more changes!
My 100s of hints (which I've had no time to look at) have all disappeared with only a hint to my last added person, no vibration but still the green leaf.
Another thing there's no need to be messing with as we were all aware what the matches leaf was but it now seems the red is their new alert to our new matches ::)
If it ain't broken, don't fix it!

What's infuriating for me is that there are bits of the site that needs fixed and they ignore it for cosmetic tinkering

Exactly!
I've had a look at quite a few 'hints'...they're already added to my tree to the persons they've hinted to ???
I don't have time to be going over old rope, I'm adding 1000s to this tree bit by bit.
Not only that, some hints have no likeness to dates of births/marriages/deaths/places of those in my tree already filled in! ::)

Think this is because that although the detail in the hint appears the same as info you aready have, it has come from a different ancestry source.
For example all the new county records that they keep adding will often duplicate data already in one of their 'England ...' sources and which you may already have added. Its more often a new source than new data.

Don't like red at all - red to me means 'error' :-\.

Does anyone know how to get rid of the red in the Extras tab? I'm not at all interested in their holiday ancestral tours, etc. I've arranged my own in the past, and will continue to do so, myself. This particular aspect is a really annoying intrusion :(
-
I've given up on them. I keep my master tree in FTM and I only kept a sync on ancestry to keep an eye on new sources of data. It's got too messy to bother with. When my sub runs out later this year I'll not be renewing.

I've been also been trying for Months to Delete it - No Luck, really annoying

Going on their facebook page is more likely to get a response than support, I've had luck with that (same applies for a lot of companies, or trustpilot pages).

That's another bugbear - why should I join Facebook to get a response. I decided not to join FB when it started and I still feel the same about it.

I’m another one who has no wish to join Facebook, Twitter or any other such site, it infuriates me when we are expected to contact companies through them.

I've also been trying for ages and your post prompted me to have another go yesterday - and hey presto this morning the red blob on the extra's tab has gone.
All I did was to go on to the tab and open everything that was available - all the trips I didn't want to go on etc. Previously I had opened the tab but not all the other options to 'learn more...'
It only disappeared overnight though, not immediately.
Have a go.

You're correct, Pheno :)
I've just been in and it's gone! I went in again after I'd posted yesterday and clicked on the 'update' tab opposite the tours section and then went a step further than usual and clicked on River Cruises. I went back and found that red was still showing. Now it's disappeared.
-
I think the red blob really means 'Look at me' both on the hint and the extra's tab. Although look means look in depth and open things but the hints blob also goes if you open the hint and look rather than just looking.

Mine disappeared overnight without doing anything whatsoever.
I personally think Ancestry read this Rootschat Topic and responded to our negative comments regarding Ancestry

I'm not sure about that as the red blob disappeared from my Hints yesterday, soon after I'd gone in and looked at some non-relevant hints!
Maybe they were experimenting ::)
