Title: Was there a place called Whittaker in the Canterbury area?
Post by: sandynz on Saturday 14 May 22 09:52 BST (UK)
Excited to have found what appears to be a incoming passenger record for my husband's Paternal Great Grandparents ((William and Anne Bailey) there seems to be notation "to Whittaker" next to the family, I've done a bit of a Google but couldn't find anything about a place called Whittaker, does anyone have any information about this? https://sites.rootsweb.com/~nzlscant/peeress.htm

It could be a person. Mr Whittaker. You can see some other people on that list have a person they have been engaged by rather than a place name.

The original passenger list from the "Peeress"

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6XRF-DL?i=7&wc=MP7N-J4D%3A119046201%2C119037202%2C119693701&cc=1609792

Which I think reads: "Engaged to Whittaker"

It's been years since I have done shipping transcriptions, but from memory in the remarks column, the people arriving sometimes had a sponsor who helped them to come.  These sponsors usually helped with the travelling costs, sometimes paid full or half.

Cheers

Thanks everyone, that makes sense. I've ordered his Grandad's birth certificate to confirm where his parents were born, hopefully adding credence to the hypothesis that these are the right people. I already know his mother's maiden name was Talliss, and have found records in Warrickshire that match, so it seems very likely.
