Not sure if this has been flagged up already but there seems to be a new series of WDYTYA on BBC1 starting on 26 May. Celebrities included are
Sue Perkins, Richard Osman, Matt Lucas, Anna Maxwell Martin and Ralf Little

It seems no time at all since the last series. I recognise most of them!
-
Nice to have a few people listed where I actually recognise the names!

I'll second that, the only unfamiliar name for me is Matt Lucas.

Excellent thanks Chris. Richard Osman is the only one I don’t know. :)
-
I was going to say the only one I didn't know is Ralph Little. Then I Googled him - and he's in Death in Paradise, so of course I know him.
So, 4 out of 4. A definite first.

Excellent thanks Chris. Richard Osman is the only one I don’t know. :)
Richard Osman is well known in the UK for co- hosting the Quiz show 'Pointless'. He has just ventured into writing novels. His first one called 'The Thursday Murder Club' was a huge hit here in the UK

Thank you, a few well known names

Matt Lucas is the bald (he has alopecia) comedian who used to star with David Walliams.
He is now better known for presenting Great British Bake Off with Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.
My niece was at school with him in Stanmore Middlesex.
-
This will be an interesting group.
Richard Osman also presents House of Games on BBC2, a real must- see in our house!
-
I've made a note to record them - thank you.

Ah...Thanks for that, yes I know now, just couldn't place the name.

I only recognize Sue Perkins.
We don’t get the show here, unfortunately.
-
I don't recognise Anna Maxwell Martin
I love Richard Osman in house of games and am taking his book on my holiday !
Of course it's the stories that matter however well known the people are .
WDYTYA Is a great series .
-
I don't recognise Anna Maxwell Martin
She's an actress, best known(to us) for Line Of Duty.
-
I remember Anna Maxwell-Martin in the play, ‘Poppy Shakespeare’, but she’s done loads of other things!
See:

Romilly.

I haven't had a TV for past 6 years so haven't seen those series tho I do watch some things on computer
I now have BBC iPlayer so regularly watch house of games and can access old series and some current ones .
-
I got round to watching the Sue Perkins programme last night, and quite enjoyed it.
As usual, I followed the UK documentation easily enough. The marriage certificate was printed in March last year, I noticed.
It would have been good to be given a clue as to how the trail to the Baltic was followed, rather than just announcing "Lithuania".
-
Richard Osman this coming week; for those of us watching BBC Wales, it`s not on Thursday but Friday 10th at 10.40 pm.
-
I only recognize Sue Perkins.
We don’t get the show here, unfortunately.
You can find current (and some past) episodes on YouTube. The only annoying thing is that they are all broken up into about 5-10 minute segments, but they are there.

Thanks MsCanuck. Will have a look.

Please finally do Parky, and put the "boring ancestors" cliche to bed. ;)

Also took the part of the shady Inn Keeper for the anniversary performance of Les Miserables at the O2. He was tremendous given it isn't his area.

As in Michael Parkinson??

I did..... but then, I knew all the line up for WDYTYA too. ;)

I watched half of Richard Usman on iPlayer before my WiFi went on strike .
Looking forward to second half and the other episodes I've missed
-
I have only seen the first 2 episodes, as I am having trouble with BBC channels on my TV, and watching on my laptop is not great. Any comments on the more recent ones?
-
I hope one day we get Ross Kemp, Steve McFadden and David Jason on WDYTYA.
-
I guess all the big names have been researched.
Perhaps they can't find anything sufficiently attention grabbing for a programme. :-\
-
I didn't enjoy the Richard Usman as so much of it was about a murder case where his relative had found the body .
Matt LUCAS. Jewish history has more of a story of research to it and resonated with me
+ I love the start of Anna Maxwell Martin discovering more about her grandparents
Big fan of recent history and how grandparents lives and personalities can affect their grandchildren
-
I felt that they were struggling to fill the programme with Richard Osman, interesting though the story of his relation was in the murder case.
The Matt Lucas story I found a compelling one and so very sad and really brought home to me the suffering of the Jews in Germany pre war and also in Holland during the war.
I missed the Anna Maxwell Martin prog but watched last night's episode with Ralf Little. I must admit I had not heard of him, and I don't think I have missed much. He seemed quite distant and almost aloof at times and it seemed almost as though he knew the outcome of the story and was impatient for the actuality of the aspects he was waiting for- does that make sense?
I was a little disappointed at his reaction that his gfather or was it his ggrandfather gave up his football career in favour of the Welsh Religeous Revival of the early 20th century.
Not a lot of warmth in his personality I felt.
Hope the next one does more for me.
-
- Are there any more in this series? I got the feeling it'd be a short one.
Don't feel to be missing out on people like Michael Parkinson, believe the reason for not "doing" him was that which would be true for so many of us, too- too everyday, limited and .... basically boring.
That said, I note that often now they are travelling only one or two generations back, sill in th memories that most of us will already have within our own families. sometimes a long historical sweep can be really exciting.
But I'll br looking forward to the next series, as always.

-
I agree TFY and l have an idea that was the last in the series. :-\ Sorry Jeff.
-
I watched the Richard Osman programme and was very disappointed.
I thought too much time was spent over what he wanted them to find.
At the start of the programme he said something like 'I'd rather find a pirate than a duke' and they obligingly found a smuggler for him.
The he said he was very interested in crime (being apparently a 'crime writer' :-\ ) so they found an ancestor who had found a body, and then spent far too long over the court case.
For myself I found the Sue Perkins and Matt Lucas programmes the best of the bunch.
-
I found the Ralf Little episode interesting, as I have a relative who was based at Scapa Flow in WWI, served on a net vessel called Trust On, but was discharged and unfortunately died of meningitis in April 1919, before the Germans scuttled their ships on 21 June 1919.
-
We (hubby too) so enjoyed the Ralf Little programme even though we were both unsure as to who he was. He came across as just a genuine guy and appeared to be himself throughout the programme- no over the top acting for the camera.
We laughed out loud several times and both of us said " it was a breath of fresh air".
No wonder daughter-in-law can't resist watching "Death in Paradise"!

Watching the Ralf Little episode now on catch up .
It's interesting ,varied and he's very personable.

And my Great Uncle* was mentioned and he went to the village where I was born and grew up 8)
* he was also capped for Wales against Ireland!

You might have seen him holding the Welsh Cup. Here's a photo of Great Uncle holding it
(He's my avatar's brother)

That’s brilliant, Gadget :)
-
I had a tip off from my cousin that it was worth watching on IPlayer so I watched it this afternoon.
Cousin has Uncle's Welsh caps :D

Thats a great photo Gadget :)

Perhaps your religious background was clouding your judgement?

Football wise I think that the what he had found out suggested that his ancestor really loved football and he was sad that he had felt the need to give it up. That he couldn't do both.

He seemed more upset than one might have thought, but does that not reflect the different attitudes and reactions on matters between today and 120 years ago. I don't think my "religious background" has any bearing on the matter.

Great photo Gadget
I like the way the celebrities all have their own interests and things which touch them .
But it's better when the when episode doesn't focus on one person .
Really enjoyed the Anna Maxwell one because some was quite recent history and she was interested in how the care system may have affected her grandfather's life.
It was horrifying that the sisters had been trying to get their little brother out of care for years ...
And unfortunately the care system still lets families down today .

Well, I didn't find Ralf aloof or distant.
In fact I rather liked the episode.
As someone who finds sporting prowess FAR more important than religion, I can understand the disappointment Ralf felt.

Takes all sorts! Let's agree to disagree. ;)

Reviving this old thread with a “celebrity” prediction for the 2023 series:
The beautiful Sir Lewis Hamilton. His family history will lead to Ghana and the slave trade on his father’s side. His mother’s side is interesting with links to Jersey and (indirectly) to the perfumery trade and extended family who seem fairly well to do.
Was filmed in August.
I may be wrong, but I hope I’m not. ;D
-
Well, if it was filmed in August, I expect they will air it...... :-\
How have you gathered "this intelligence"?

I may be way off the mark MH, but a couple of things were said about a visit to Africa, and how his family got their surname, and some filming …. So I put two and two together. ;D
-
Isn`t there a programme about grandfathers on ITV. I haven`t watched it, just read about it, could be that.
-
Yes, there was a programme on recently called, I think, 'My Grandparents War'. There were 4 episodes. The episode featuring Kit Harington, an actor from Games of Thrones, was particularly interesting, showing his grandparents as spys in the second world war.

Sorry Ruskie. I know I am being awfully thick and pedantic, but, "said" where?
-
That crossed my mind too Billy - I wondered if it could be another family history based show, or even a stand alone, but WDYTYA is the original and possibly/probably still the best, so my guess is WDYTYA. :)
MH, the reference to his family history, and time spent in Africa, was mentioned a couple of weeks ago during the Singapore Grand Prix. A bit more information here:
https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/24181/12711593/lewis-hamilton-mercedes-driver-says-trip-to-africa-helped-him-find-peace-amid-formula-1-challenges
I believe he already had some previous knowledge of his FH, so I hope they can find some surprises.
-
Ah! Thank you Ruskie, now I understand.
But perhaps a book is coming?
Poor fella has had to sell his red jet, so times must be hard for him too. :'(
-
I hadn’t heard about that MH. Young boys and their toys hey? ;D
I’m sure we’ll find out in good time what the FH project is, if indeed there is one. :)
