Title: Clifton Industrial School
Post by: NormanE on Thursday 05 May 22 06:59 BST (UK)
Please can anyone help me with information on records for resident boys at the the Clifton Industrial School between 1890 and 1905?   I understand that Magistrate records could contain referral information if they exist.

Note that there are 2 addresses during tthe period you mention.
Is it possible to do an address search in the 1891 and 1901 census

There are many interesting hits on British Newspapers on Line.  Western Daily Express 7 May 1901, Prize Distribution  mentions a George Whitehead who obtained first prize for the second year in succession for an essay on the Navy:   so a name to search on the 1901 census.  Head Teacher Mr Franks.

It would seem, the children sent to Clifton Industrial School were from other Counties as well.

Nottingham Guardian 4 June 1886

Wednesday (before Messrs H R Parker and J Martin

INCORRIGIBLE YOUNGSTERS

Ann Hewitt, seamer, Loughborough, was charged with failing to send her boy to school regularly.  Mr Parsons, school attendance officer, said that the mother had been previously fined in respect of the non-attendance of her son.  The boy was incorrigible, and applied to the bench to make an order to send him to an industrial school,

The Bench made an order for the boy to be sent to Clifton Industrial School

John Holt, labourer, Loughborough
Fanny Clarke, seamer, Loughborough
and Harley Miller, gardener, Loughborough, were summoned for like offences.

In the case of Holt and Clarke, the boys were ordered to be sent to an Industrial School.

Harley Miller was fined 5s. Including costs.

Can see a number of Newspaper Articles for children before the Bench, being sent to the School from various Counties and some from Wales.

I have one very similar from Berkshire. Son was habitual truant. His father was fined for not sending him to school, despite trying his best to get the boy to attend. He ended up at Clifton I S. I originally found the boy there on the 1881 census many years ago, but it wasn't until recently I found the background to the case in a local paper on line. I did read somewhere that the magistrates tended to send the offending children to somewhere some distance from home to deter them from absconding and going back home.
