I'm having trouble reading the reason for my ancestor being discharged. I think the last word is Malta maybe and i'm not sure on the first word. Also does anyone know why he would have St. Andrew's cross on the back of his left hand?

Because he was Scottish?

"Run Malta"
This means he deserted his ship in Malta.

Yes, I should've been more precise about my question haha. I was more meaning if it had any significance other than him being Scottish, like was this something that all Scottish mariner's had or did only certain people get it?

Thanks Tony, I'll have to look further into this now!

My Scots grandad got a tiny tattoo on back of his hand of a bird between his thump and first finger mostly because of peer pressure he said sailors were considered wimps if they didn't have a tattoo ! * He was in Malta too.

Just realised I've got the wrong person... This man was born exactly a year to the day before my John Cameron in the same place. I had assumed he had lied about his age to make himself a year older. Another document gave parent's names which showed me I had the wrong man. ;D
